markg Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 new boy here! just got my seight kit! am very chuffed! have done ally panels! and need advice on rear brake pipe/fuel pipe route and is it ok to fix these to the ally panels or must they be fixed to chassis rails? Quote

Linds Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 IMHO Suggest you fix to chassis rails. Vibration could cause pop rivets to work loose and enlarge the hole. Also do you really want to see the ugly end of a rivet poking through a panel into the cockpit when, in a year or so you decide to remove the interior panels, (previously hiding ugly rivet head) to go racing ? Mark Stanton Posted October 15, 2002 Posted October 15, 2002 oh yes ....... fix the pipework to the chassis rails Quote
markg Posted October 15, 2002 Author Posted October 15, 2002 thanks for help never thought about vibration in panels when i rang parts @ westfield they said to stick pipes under floor panel as per build manual! but didnt fancy this due to increasing amounts of speed bumps low ground clearance etc. so if i put rear brake line along offside trans tunnell chassis rail and fuel pipe opposite i should be ok? btw i am not going to ask questions about diffs calipers etc. as i have been drooling over v8 westfields for years! and have already sourced engine/box diff brakes etc. Quote
Mike H Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 Go one then which gearbox and diff have you gone for? I'm building a V8 starter kit at the moment, got my gearbox - a Cossie T5 - but having problems finding my preferred diff - a 3.14:1 I may have to settle for a 3.38/3.36. Wiring loom and brake pipes are next for me too and I was wondering where to put the pipes. I'll be going for fuel injection so it makes it more difficult to find an alternative location as there's 2 of them. Have you joined the seight mailing list? markg Posted October 16, 2002 Author Posted October 16, 2002 have got standard sd1 engine and box ! found a complete vdp efi with 37k miles on clock for £50 am not using efi and will be on carbs, probably a holley! my diff is a 3.62 4x4 im not too bothered about speed just love the sound of the v8 what silicone sealer are you using and which front brake setup? btw mine will be yet another navy blue one! Quote
Pembroke Pat Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 I got polyurethane adhesive from Neil Foreman. This stuff contains isocyanate ( superglue ) and I fancy would hold the panels on without the rivets. I have put a dab on with any rivets p clips as well. Neils web site is www.nfauto.co.uk. He has lots of odds and sods for kit cars Quote
Mike H Posted October 16, 2002 Posted October 16, 2002 found a complete vdp efi with 37k miles on clock for £50 That's not a bad deal! Engine is my biggest dilemma at the moment. my diff is a 3.62 4x4 im not too bothered about speed just love the sound of the v8 Ahh, yess it may be some time before I have the thing up and running but the sound will certainly be worth it. what silicone sealer are you using and which front brake setup? btw mine will be yet another navy blue one! Started using silicone sealant but then quickly swapped over to some 'orrible black stuff. It's proper body panel seam sealant (polyurethane based) and sticks much better than silicone stuff IMO. Front brakes - I've no idea yet. I'm using Cortina uprights with alloy hubs. I'll probably (funds allowing) go for 4 pot alloy calipers from Cat Motorsport or Westfield with solid grooved/drilled discs. As you may have guessed by my avatar, my car is going to be lovely lime green Mike Oh, and an aeroscreen Quote
markg Posted October 16, 2002 Author Posted October 16, 2002 i did exactly the same with the silicone did trans tunnel panels decided it was pants and got the pu adhesive stuff bit pricey but much better! as to brakes got cortina uprights myself and considering 2.8 capri calipers and vented discs although a friend has scorpio fronts that he thinks may work! the cat four pots are nice calipers though! just hope santa is feeling generous this year any ideas on exhausts westfields twin sidepipes seem to be serious wallet trauma!! Mike H Posted October 17, 2002 Posted October 17, 2002 Front brakes, may be one of the last decisions I make as there are so many options but 4 pots are on what you could call my 'wish list'. But I am definitely going for side exit exhausts because of ground clearance on my driveway! They look much better in my opinion too - people instantly know what you've got. I think I'll stick to Westfield for the headers but may get silencers from somewhere else. Getting headers made elsewhere would mean trailering your pride and joy to someone else so they can cut big holes in the bodywork. I'd rather get the Westfield headers and do the cutting myself. Looking round at other seights, the Westfield headers look quite good anyway. I agree though, V8 exhaust systems can cost serious beer tokens. I guess choice of engine is more important here as I don't want to shell out for 2 cat systems just to get through SVA. Just to give you an idea of other prices, Wunoff would charge approx. £1500 (yes one thousand five hundred English pounds) I think for a full stainless repackable side pipe system. cheers Mike Quote
