Windoze 7

OK, just what it says in the title.  My computer is compatible for the job, and XP support is starting to fade a bit.  No, I don't want to change computers, don't want Linux, moderate computer knowledge but the font of wisdom I ain't.  Would have to do a clean install which is a tad daunting but have the backup external drive to handle it.

The point is this: Is Windoze 7 Home Premium upgrade worth the time, expense, hassle and risk over XP Home Std SP3 in terms of better interface, speed, fluidity, etc, or should I just stick with what I have?

I can see Blatman, a gent of very few firm opinions, strolling in on the horizon...

True, which is my base instinct, but it is busily being fought by my upgradeitis side and the knowledge that I will have to do so eventually (whenever that will be) and want to do it on my terms, not when necessity dictates.  Tough choices.

Necessity won't dictate that you have to upgrade for a good number of years unless you need to install some software that isn't backwards compatible with XP (Which probably won't happen for quite some time). By the time it does then your current computer will be due to be binned as it will to slow and outdated to run the new software anyway.

I have 7 on my laptop and XP on my other computers and to be honest I would not spend out on 7 to upgrade. There is nothing wrong with 7 it just does not do anything better than XP IMO it just looks a bit different.

I upgraded from xp to vista hated it so went back to xp I suspect the same would appy here.

Win7 is actually reasonably good, much better than Vista which was a waste of time.

So there I was just stolling by, when all of a sudden...

and XP support is starting to fade a bit

Microsoft have pledged to support XP until 2015. Other software / hardware vendors may not of course, so I guess it's a case of when you feel the tipping point has been reached for the applications and hardware you use.

but it is busily being fought by my upgradeitis side

Windoze 7 *isn't* an upgrade, so stop thinking that way...

I'll be using XP Pro for as long as I can. I suspect Windoze 7 to be history before I really need to upgrade, assuming Microsoft follow their usual cycle of a new O/S every 4 years or so...

Win 95, then Win 98 followed quickly by Win98SE. Then Win ME (for home users) and 2000 for business, followed by XP in about 2002/3, followed by Vista in '06 and now Windoze 7 in late 09. Expect the next "best O/S ever" in 2012... ish... 3 years before official support for XP ends ;)

there is no upgrade path from XP to Win 7 anyway you will have to go to Vista first or do a fresh install.

if performance of the o/s is not an issue then don't bother.

personally I prefer to be up with the jones's

Windows product lifecycle can be found here.

XP Pro is currently in the extended support phase, a definition of which can be found here.

Interestingly, consumer support is not part of the extended support phase, which applies only to business users. However, with XP Pro still extremely common, I doubt there will be anything that can't be fixed should it "break", and learning that doesn't make me nervous for my operating system stability or anything else...

Ah, nothing I like better to start my day than a good slap down.

Figured that might be the general response, so thanks to all who responded.  Will stick with my XP Home which is obviously sufficient for my needs.

Unless you are a large corporate with a support department, I would move from XP to Win7.

For the vast majority of business and all home users, migrating to Win7 is a very good idea.  It has a lot of new features which are well worth having.

FWIW I have a little home network of 5 computers, I'm not an IT geek by profession...

I'm a user who likes to dabble...oooooeeer!    ;)

My own machine has XP Pro, my wife's pc and my old laptop have XP Home, my daughters laptop has Vista, and my new laptop has Win7......

The only m/c that has been problematic...You've guessed it, is the laptop with Vista as it's OS.

Vista seems to have more issues with networking than the other O/S's too.

Personally I prefer XP to Win7, but that may be as much to do with familiarity as anything else. From my limited experience  I would suggest that for home usage Win7 is a much better bet than Vista but really only worthwhile upgrading over XP if you need a new computer and get it thrown into the deal?  ???

Here at work we are still using XP as opposed to Win7 but it's largely as an XP emulator running on Solaris Unix boxes....
