pipsters_wagon Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Westfield SEi 1660 Xflow with twin 40's, luminition ignition and standard mechanical fuel pump. The car was fine last summer and this is the first time its ran since October. The car starts and runs and pulls great until it starts to get hot. Once hot the car starts missing and eventually cuts out. Whilst cutting out the unburnt petrol is ignited in the exhaust. Leave it for half an hour and it starts fine and runs until hot and then cuts out again. I don't think its fuel starvation due to evaporation. It seems electric. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Phil Quote

tankerman24 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I had this problem on my old X flow, I changed the coil which cured it for a while, It turned out the electronic ignition pack was knackered,. If you need a replacement electronic system you may want to try H&H Ignition solutions, they do an exchange dizzy with all the electronics, they were great when I used them. ( make sure this is your prob before taking my advice though ) Quote

Took me ages to find it, gives the symptons you describe. Just a poor connection on one of the 3 pins, as the plug is not weather proof Fuel pump Quote
smosar Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Glad to see I am not the only one exact same symptons 1700 crossflow Took it out last Saturday 3 miles to go to shops. Got back in huge backfire smoke from twin 40s Started to drive back misfired and finally died about 2 miles from home. Had to use recovery service to get back!! Checked fuel no problem with delivery at carbs so must be electric Played around with wires to distributor luminition type and car started and seems to run okay As a precaution Just ordered new cap rotor arm and spark leads and intend to change them first then if necessary do the coil and last if necessary ignition system. Typical fault is here when weather changes (pain!!!) Quote
Mid life crisis Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Check your fuel pipes around the fuel pump and tank, if they are perished and soft they can collapse under the vacuum created. Car will run fine for a while then stop. Leaving it for some time will allow the pipes to expand. Then when you drive it again problem will repeat itself. Also check the in line fuel filter if your car has one. Just may be something worth checking before you start spending money on ignition bits!!! Quote
pipsters_wagon Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 Many thanks for all your advice. I replaced the luminition electronic box last year and have a new coil which I never fitted. So I'll fit that and replace the rotor arm. I'll also relace the flexible fuel pipes as its a cheap fix whilst I've got the carbs off. Hopefully it will solve the problem. Quote

pipsters_wagon Posted April 24, 2010 Author Posted April 24, 2010 Many thanks for all your suggestions... I finally got around to ordering all the parts and fitting them. I've replaced all the flexible fuel pipes and the filter while I was doing it. Replaced the fuel pump also. Fitted a luminition coil which I had and never fitted. Replaced the rotor arm and checked the connection to the optical sensor in the distributor. I'm going to test it tomorrow, if the problem continues then I'll have to bit the bullet and buy a new luminition box. Which I'll not be happy about as it pretty new. Quote
stussysoil Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 It maybe worthwhile getting them (Lumenition) to test it first rather than jump in and buy a new one straight away. Moreover when they tested mine and found a fault they offered me a discount on a replacement. Quote
