Blatman Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Here y'go... Or something similar... I've taken that screw out even loked in the online IBM manual but nothing seems to want to leap out looking anything like a hardrive, good news is you can hear it start up! Starting up is good. All we need to know is, are the heads moving? If not, it's going to be unrecoverable by us mere mortals... Quote
cast iron Posted April 11, 2010 Author Posted April 11, 2010 Ah the key was to open the screen and that seemed to release the drive with the lock screw removed. Unfortunately the hard drive rattles and thats not shaking it! Ive put it back in but its still dead, I think its the CPU fan I can hear Quote
Blatman Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 I'm sure you know what a hard drive should sound like during normal operation, but they can sound quite different when they are in the open air. BUT, if the laptop still won't boot, then the next step is to borrow a hard drive caddy, plug the laptop drive in to that, then plug the caddy in to a working desk top with a USB cable. If the laptop drive shows up as a drive in My Computer, then you'll be able to resue files from it. If it doesn't show up as an external drive, it's dead... In the picture below, my USB external drive is the one called Sea_Disk. If it's working your laptop drive will show up with a drive letter of E: or F: or something. If it isn't there, then as I say, it's probably properly dead.. Quote
cast iron Posted April 11, 2010 Author Posted April 11, 2010 yep i know what you mean about the different sounds, Ive a cradle lined up probably next weekend now Quote
