What do the two weights mean that are stamped onto a metal plate under the bonnet?

They are the maximum allowable design weights for each axle.  Don't worry - they are not the "actual" weight on each axle.

So there's no way of finding out how much mine weights, short of weighing it ;)

If you go to a council weighbridge (often near refuse depts, etc) and slip them a few quid they'll weigh you. Mine was 680 Kg total - in lardy trim (seiw with 2.0 zetec, 15" alloys, sports seats on runners, spare wheel, jack, tools, weather gear, carpets, etc).
