JamesD Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Just about to buy a rack from Westfield, as you are all aware there are 2 types. So I am building to a budget, I am not planning on Racing my Westy, questions to ask... 1) Is the extra cost of the quick rack warrented? 2) Will it drive like a pig with the standard rack?(i.e. if I fit the standard rack will I be wishing that I had fitted the quick rack all along in a few months time) Opinions please Gentlemen and Ladies. Also if anyone knows where I can buy stub axles and CV joints cheaper than Westfield please let me know. Regards, JD Quote
Nick M Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Yes, get a quick rack. But *don't* get it from Westfield - Cat Motorsport are much cheaper (although you may have an exchange surcharge without an existing rack to swap). The quick rack isn't too pointy or heavy for general use and it's much more responsive (obviously !! when you want to put in a quick bit of opposite lock. I swapped my standard rack for a Cat Motorsport one and it's brilliant. Quote
gregh Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 I have a standard rack and as soon as Cat get the quickrack in stock I'm swopping it, I only noticed an issue on tight right handers (especially at Cadwell). regards. greg Quote
Gazza Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 I agree with all the above, except that if you can't wait for CAT etc to get 'em back in stock I'd try Peter Lloyd Rallying (www.peterlloydrallying.co.uk) who got one sent to my door the next morning as part of their normal service. The racks are about £123 inc vat/carriage outright (i.e. without exchange). Top service. I've nothing against CAT, and no connection to PLR either - just a customer! Quote
gregh Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 looking at the Peter Lloyd ones his are 2.4 high ratio racks, long or short stem, whereas the CAT ones are either 2.5 or 1.9 I'm going for the 1.9 one from cat I hope Greg Quote
Gazza Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 ...erm, when you speak to CAT you'll discover that the 2.5 and the '1.9' are the same rack. The difference is that the 1.9 has lock stops to prevent the cycle wings touching the body on full lock. The 2.4 and 2.5 racks are effectively the same. With my close fitting cycle wings they don't touch the body with a 2.4 rack. The 1.9 turns version gives a very poor turning circle due to the lock stops, but you make have no choice but to use this '1.9' rack. The SVA demands that the wheel arches don't touch the body on full lock. So I'd say its the safe option in your case. Quote
Clive Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Also be aware that the Westfield quick rack used to be a plain old standard one with stop locks on. They may well have changed their product since then. However I do agree they are worth fitting. Clive Quote
Nick M Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 The turning circle is greatly enhanced by liberal use of the right foot....... Quote
Mark Stanton Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Hello Nick - how's things over the pond Oh yes almost forgot - Quick rack - well worth the investment Quote
ACW Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Rally Design (Raldes) will do you a quicker rack with 2.2 turns l2l without stops. this does mean however you will need to mke you own stops or buy wide track.... www.raldes.co.uk best bet/easy bet for you would be to get a Cat 1.9 jobbie with lock stops.... Terry Everall Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 I changed my standard set up for a CAT quick rack (with stops). It is excellent and does not take long to get used to on the road although at first it seems a little lively over bumpy roads!! DO IT Big Tel Quote
Nick M Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Afternoon Mr Stanton, All nice and warm and sunny over here - a clement 95 degrees !! Few teething troubles with the house - looks like we might be moving already after just 4 weeks !! - but other than that it's fine. Got lots of opportunities to buy goodies for the car - Hawk Black brake pads for example are the same in dollars here as we pay in pounds at home !! And I feel a set of 6x13 Panasport minilite replica wheels might find their way onto my xmas list !! Be back home in 3 weeks for a wedding so I'm going to get the jumpers and thermals ready now !!
