Oil for differential

Recommended Posts

Just been to friendly ford dealer for diff oil.  Only available in 5 litre size and special order (2 weeks!;).   Explained that I only need 1.2 litres but told to try halfords as "It'll probably be cheaper".

Tried halfords but their guide gives 2 alternatives for the sierra diff SAE 90 and SAE 80W 90.

Which is correct for normal diff (not LSD)?

It it's a Sierra diff we're talking about they don't need anything special in the oil department. Either of the 2 you mention would be OK. I think I put 80W90 in mine.

One thing to be aware of is that you need a heavy duty oil, in the past many applications used the same oil in the box and diff.

Shell range is Spirax A 80/90, hope this helps.
