Quick_Learner Posted September 24, 2002 Posted September 24, 2002 Anyone any idea why the VX and the Getrag gearbox that ive recently brought dont match whatsoever?!?! The guy that i brought it from told me "you dont need a bellhousing as the two just bolt together" - deal i thought, but when it turned up, the shape is different (the gearbox is generally round but the VX 2.0l 16VXE is round over the top but then squared off just below the centre drive shaft socket). Anyone with any experience/ideas? I hope to have some photos as from tomorrow eve if this helps. Thanks guys, QL Quote
Fast Westie Posted September 24, 2002 Posted September 24, 2002 Quick Some of the VX engines were canted over 7degrees Quote
windy Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 There are 2 types of Getrag boxes fitted to Vauxhalls of the 70's & 80's era. The 5 speed box from the Opel Manta (mine came from an A reg car) is the one that will fit straight on, the bellhousing bolt pattern matches the 2 litre XE block. You will need to get a special clutch disc (Helix make one) to adapt to the flywheel. The only slightly technical bit is getting the box to fit the std tunnel which will need a bulge pressing into the ally side to allow clearance for the reverse detent (Only for type 9 tunnel, the wider one, MT75 size should give plenty of room). You will also need to remove the gear lever from the box and mount it on the chassis. The ford mounting can be adapted to fit the box with a bit of fabrication. Mounting the engine vertically, not at 7°, is preferable since all the VX engine bits for the westfield are off the shelf parts (e.g sump, engine mounts, exhaust etc). Getting these parts made as one-off is hard and expensive. My experience of the Getrag is that it is very good for a road car (identical ratio's to the type 9 ford box but much lighter), but it will not withstand competition use. Regards Windy Quote
PeteBishop Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 QL It sounds as if the g/box you have got could come out of a manta GTE which had the 2 liter Cam in head engine(CIH) and i think that the bellhousing is different to the OHC engines. Not sure if you can swop the bellhousings over between getrag box's. The same box was also used in the Carlton but with a different gear linkage. Hope that is of some help. Cheers Peter Quote
scott beeland Posted September 28, 2002 Posted September 28, 2002 I've got a bellhousing if you want one. Let me know Quote
windy Posted September 29, 2002 Posted September 29, 2002 No, the correct box has the bellhousing & gearbox cast in the same unit so they cannot be separated. Whatever you have if the bellhousing is removable sounds like you have the wrong one. Was it from a Shuvit? Windy Quote
