Handbrake on light

Should I have a handbrake on light on my sport carbon? 1999 factory built.

I don't see any light come on when the handbrake is on.

If yes then where should it be, and if yes what could be wrong with it!!

cheers,

Not sure about your exact model, but I would have thought it should do. It is a red light on the Dashboard with the (!;) symbol in the middle.

There is a switch on the side of the handbrake lever which is closed when the handbrake is on.

I had the other problem with mine whereby the light was on all the time, I found it was the carpet on the transmission tunnel was pressing against it stopping it from closing when the handbrake was down.

If the handbreak is on you should notice by the fact that the leaver is raised at an angle to the tunnel & the rear breaks are engaged!

Greg,

Yes you should and you should be VERY concerned if you don't. WHY ? you say.

Becasue the light is used to show LOW BRAKE fluid in the master cylinder as well as the fact that the handbrake is on. It has a dual purpose. As already said it's a red light that comes on when the handbrake is applied, this is not only to show that the handbrake is on, but also is used to check that the light is working. It should be below the 2 turn indicators and near the blue main beam light. Your bulb may be blown in the light. Once you have found it and sorted it out so that it works with the handbrake applied, take the handbrake off and with the ingnition turned on push the black top part downwards on the master cylinder (assuming you have one with 2 wires going to it! which you should) this should turn the red light on as well, indicating low brake fluid.

Hope this helps.

cheers Nick,

I think I've found it, can I just pull it straight out to check if the bulb is ok, or do I need to get at it from behind ;)

Greg,

Pleaseed you found the light, you may have to get at the 2 wires behind and take them of inorder to be able to get the lamp thought the hole. It's worth looking behind first to see the colour of the wires and which ones they are, so you can be sure to put them back. It should not matter which terminal they go on. It might be worth trying the ingnition on and then pressing the brake master cylinder switch first, because it may not be the lamp that has gone, but the switch on the handbrake lever? This would find out for you. If not and you get the bulb out should be easy to get a replacement at local motor shop.

Hope this sorts it out, any more problems e-mail me.

Nick
