zvezdochka Posted September 20, 2002 Posted September 20, 2002 Anticipating fitting diff tomorrow, all bolts and washers etc ready, decided to test weight of diff again and wondering how to lift it / position it. Have 20 year old son who can lift, but do I really need a hoist or something? I intend to protect chassis with tape cardboard cloths etc. Any advice welcome. (Chassis is sitting on westfield build stands so I think it will need 2 people plus one to insert bolts and rod) Quote
steppenwolf Posted September 20, 2002 Posted September 20, 2002 My wife Jane and I fitted our Sierra LSD quite easily with the chassis on the Westfield build stands - the solution to holding it was found by Jane ..... we held it in place with rope taking most of the weight and then inserted the bolts to complete the installation! Buzzer Posted September 20, 2002 Posted September 20, 2002 sounds like a load of woosies . One man job ...I swapped mine for an LSD a few months ago. just a fiddly job getting the bl**dy thing out dave Quote
JonnyBoy Posted September 20, 2002 Posted September 20, 2002 hear, hear. its not heavy....as Buzzer, i did it all as a one man job. The tricky bit is getting the top bolt and washers in, but if u do as Steppenwolf did, and support it with rope (or bottle jack/wood blocks) its not so bad. Quote
steppenwolf Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 Oooh my heroes - such big strong boys! Obviously though, doing it on your own, you miss out on the excellent sight of Steppenwolfess bending over the rear of the chassis with no hands free .......... hmmmm togetherness ..... Quote
Buzzer Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 Steppenwolf, can't quite see...are those yellow ribbons holding up that diff in that pic Quote
steppenwolf Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 They sure are - they were tying up Steppenwolfess's golden locks into bunches but she looks so much sexier with her hair falling all over the chassis ....... Quote
Blatman Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 Hey, zvezdochka............ Do us all a favour. Before you fit the diff, stick it on a set of bathroom scales and weigh it, then post the weight here, so that we all know what it.....er...... weighs............It'll save some arguments in the future, I'm sure.................... zvezdochka Posted September 22, 2002 Author Posted September 22, 2002 Thanks, It's fitted and was surprisingly easy. Didn't get the note about weighing in time but son estimates 20kg max. Cheers Rick Quote
Rob Marshall Posted September 22, 2002 Posted September 22, 2002 Hi Blatters Just weighed my spare diffs, 3.92 open diff 25kg, 3.62 LSD 27kg, both these include oil. Hope this saves the arguments, please note the scales are rather old so not very accurate, but it does give an idea. Is the Quaife ATB lighter??? Quote
Blatman Posted September 23, 2002 Posted September 23, 2002 Dunno, my ATB is in an Escort diff.............I reckon an ATB add's a little weight to the diff, though. Not enough to make the addition of an ATB a difficult question. Just fit one. You won't regret it. I reckon (I've never weighed it ) that the Escort diff in the Westfield carrier must weigh getting on for 20 kilos, so the weight difference between a Sierra diff and an Escort isn't as much as I imagined................ Steppenwolf Ta. Looking forward to that.................... Quote
