AndyM Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Having just completed the build, I started sorting the insurance so I can get to the SVA. Best quote was from Adrian Flux, but they say I can only get insurance for 30 days without a registration No. After that policy is cancelled and I loose my money if I don't have a Reg No., they will not extend it. So what happens if I fail my SVA ?? Anyone one else had this problem or have an insurance co. that offers a good price but without the above restriction ? Quote
Mike H Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 I don't remember such a restriction when I had my car insured with Footman James. Until it was registered, they just knew it by it's chassis number. I had it insured from the day I received the kit. My new kit is also insured with them under a 'laid up' policy (ie off road). I just gave them the chassis no and an approx. value which I can update as the build progresses. Give them a call 01215614196 I think. cheers Mike Quote
Chris.B Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Mine is insured with Adrian Flux. I had "transit" cover to take to on a trailer to SVA. I passed SVA & then got "on the road" cover for the journey to & from the DVLA for the vehicle inspection to complete the registration process. This is on the chassis number & runs to the end of my policy. All they want is the registration number once it's awarded. Chris My Build Site Quote
windy Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 There have been several postings about flux an their incompetence (allegedly) so i'd think carefully before sending any money to them. If they have given you "transit" cover it is probably for a Ford Van!!! I had no problems with my car in the days when only an MOT was required (before SVA) and drove my car down for its test insured on the chassis number, without tax or plates. Windy Quote
McSpreader Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Chris.B, After reading your reply I am a little confused. I am lead to believe that you are able to drive you car to SVA and back - but not allowed to drive it to the DVLA local office for the registration?? Also, while on the subject of registration - I aimed to get it done on the way back from my SVA in Birmingham, but only to find out that the Local Office is only open for inspections between 8 and 9 am! Is this typical?? Faced with the dilema of having to 'transport' the car to the DVLA I am now miffed, as I don't have a trailor etc. and feel a little stuck. Ay ideas of my options - anyone?? Thanks Si Quote
Chris.B Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 McSpreader The same rules apply about driving to / from the DVLA as per to / from an SVA test. It's permitted if you have insurance AND and appointment letter. I'm also dead miffed about the delay in getting the registration with the DVLA - my appointment is September 26th but I passed SVA on September 3rd. I was explicitly told by the local DVLA office that I must have an appointment since an inspector would need to see the car. Cheers Chris My Build Site Quote
james grayley Posted September 19, 2002 Posted September 19, 2002 mmm strange this.... i was told under no circumstances could i drive the car for a dvla inspection after passing sva. as it turned out i didnt need to, morning after sva, got a certificate of newness signed, nipped down to local dvla office, handed it over with a copy of the mac, insurance etc and they told me to come back after lunch, which i did and was given a tax disc for a new 02 reg with the reg document taking about 10 days through the post. (no inspection required) had it insured for nine months with fj against chassis number before i passed sva. covered driving on road without tax, mot sva etc to and from sva and garages for things doing in order to comply with sva, which just so happened to be a long way from my house! Phil W Posted September 19, 2002 Posted September 19, 2002 If you look on the vehicle inspectorate web site you will see that there are three occasions when you can drive an unregistered car on the road 1- to sva 2- to dvla for inspection 3- to a prebooked mot .You cannot drive to a garage for sva work unless booked in for an mot .When my car passed sva my local dvla said that since sva they do not need to inspect car and just issued the reg no and tax disc Quote
Chris.B Posted September 19, 2002 Posted September 19, 2002 When my car passed sva my local dvla said that since sva they do not need to inspect car and just issued the reg no and tax disc Great consistency from the DVLA - my local office (Bristol two weeks ago) said I MUST take the car for an inspection - even though I had just passed SVA on September 3rd (the day I called them). As the inspection is September 26, there's just one more week to go! Chris My Build Site Quote
darkman Posted September 20, 2002 Posted September 20, 2002 Hey McSpreader, Try contacting Worcester VLO, instead of Brum. Might get a friendlier reception? Darkman Quote
McSpreader Posted September 20, 2002 Posted September 20, 2002 Thanks for the tip Darkman. Phil - can you remember where you saw this info - as I have had a look on the web site and found nothing. I would rather have written evidence - as there are so may differing stoires. Thanks. Quote
james grayley Posted September 21, 2002 Posted September 21, 2002 well phil i disagree! when i got my form to fill in for sva, i read the book that came with it - which i still have. It clearly states that the car can be driven to any garage prior to sva to have work done in order to allow it to pass an sva test. I have this in writing. (providing the car is insured against the chassis no.) It does however state that it is your responsibility to ensure the car is roadworthy- wnatever that means. I did this several times and was stopped by the police four times. I carried the book and insurance in the car, which they looked at every time and agreed i was not doing anything wrong- even when the fuel line burst and p******** fuel all over the road while they were sat at the trafffic lights behind me!! i will scan it in and post it for anyone who wants it! car won't need inspecting by dvla if you get westfield to sign a decleration of newness. neilb Posted September 22, 2002 Posted September 22, 2002 I wouldn't mind a copy of this book, I could do with having a few bits checked over before the SVA by a local garage. About the insurance who do you recommend - I have got laid-up cover from Adrian Flux are they OK or is it worth the extra few quid to goto Footman James? Thanks Neil Quote
Chris.B Posted September 23, 2002 Posted September 23, 2002 car won't need inspecting by dvla if you get westfield to sign a decleration of newness. ] Again no consistency in our stories about contact with the DVLA. The Bristol local office have got my certificate of newness from Westfield (and all the other documentation) and still have asked me to bring the car in for inspection on September 26th - 3 weeks after I passed SVA.
