pistonbroke Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 when i tries to connect to Utube I gets this silly message ......... QUOTE On March 13, we are dropping support for your browser. You'll still be able to watch videos after that date, but new features may not work properly. Goes on to say that I should really use a different browser other than IE . One suggestion is I can use Firefox , which I already have installed ! So what the devil does utube not run , should I have to do something to get Utube up and running with FF ? What to do ? please Quote

Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Firefox is many peoples preferred choice - I dont bother with IE Quote
Blatman Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Pist... Youtube will still work on IE6.02, which is what I use. BUT you may find that HD doesn't work, or maybe widesceen videos don't look right or something. It's no biggy. Download Firefox and it'll sit on your machine just like any other programme. To fire it up, simply double click the shortcut and it will look almost exactly like IE7... ish... and will work pretty much in the same way that IE does. If I browse a web site that doesn't run in IE6, I double click Firefox, copy 'n' paste the URL and use that. Simples... Cue the usual "You should use the latest version" outcry, but let me put it this way... 99.999% of the sites I visit work just fine with IE6. It never crashes. I've never been hacked. I have zero issues with running IE6, and the vast majority of "ordinary" web surfers wouldn't be able to tell if they were using IE 6, 7 or 8 if the obvious screen borders were concealed. So the odd Youtube video won't work. Big deal. Run up Firefox and watch it on that... Quote

I trust that if you are not updating your IE you are still performing the other windows updates? Quote
Blatman Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 QUOTE No Comment. Or, example No.2 I have intimate knowledge of two (count 'em, 2) multi thousand user corporate networks. Neither network will use anything newer than IE6.02. The "official" line is that IE7 does not meet the same security standard as IE6.02 yet, at least as far as those networks are concerned. IE8 isn't even discussed. Their admins should know their stuff I would hope Quote

All I will say is my network (and I can call it mine as I own a reasonable percentage of it) serves a purpose and it serves it very well. The size of the network does not by default make their opinions correct. IE6 might be correct for their network but that doesn't mean everybody else is wrong for not using it any more. I have neither the time or interest to enter in to an lengthy argument with you but surely I should be allowed to express my opinion and try and help forum members without fear of being shot down in flames by you simply because I questioned your browser choice once. pistonbroke Posted February 22, 2010 Author Posted February 22, 2010 Thanks for the posts and info's chaps, which as usual is very welcome Though in my first post I did say "I already have firefox installed" ( perhaps I should have used bigger letters ) Whenever I open a link to utube I get the error message as above , I can cut and paste the URL into IE6 as Blatters suggests and that works fine . I just wondered why Utube doesn't run when I have FFox installed , from what you say its because IE needs updating, or a change to another browser . I have been told not to delete IE6 as it is needed for some vital operations, so I assume FF will/should run alongside it . I dont want to upgrade IE, for the same reasons Blatters has described. However I think I have found a workaround by downloading some 3rd party drivers , which I "think" allow me to use IE6 and run links to Utube from there. I say "think" because I also have AVG + firewall installed , which after paying up front for a 2 year license turned out to be a vertual "pain in the azz" I'm having fun configuring that as well and never know which to blame for any errors IE6 , AVG , Windows XP or ME again thanks for your help Quote

Matt We're not arguing, we're discussing, or at least, that's what I was hoping for. But we can argue if you want. You know as well as I do that if you read something with the wrong voice in your head, it can make the written prose appear entirely different to the reader. I was hoping to draw out an interesting and reasoned debate on the pro's and cons of browser choice with someone (anyone) who may have experience or insights that I don't have. Quote
