Norman Verona Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Thinking of getting a 1993 Range Rover with 93,000 miles. It's cheap and looks OK in the photo. Seller says the rear tailgate catches are rusted and the tailgate won't lock. Also that the air suspension has been replaced with springs. He says the underside is rust free. Anyone going to tell me not to be stupid? ps, We had a later model which broke down 14 times in 12 months and lost me £12,000. So it may be a case of bitten once going back for more punishment. However how much pain for just over £3000? Quote
SteveD Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 same as owt you get good ones and bad ones you pay your money and take your chance same as any seconhand car really , i had a new one for 7 months and it was great loved it and had no problems, Quote
Jonah Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Hi Norman, Unless your desperate why buy a 4 wheel drive now when they are fetching premium prices because of the bad weather. Is it a v8 or a diesel, is it french registered lhd. 3k seems like strong money for a 17 year old vehicle. You know what they used to say, if you dislike someone then give them a V8 range rover as it will make them poor. If you hate them give them a horse box complete with horse to tow behind it as that will bankrupt them Whats the weather like there. Its snowing hard here again & we have had 3 or 4 inches already although its quite slushy out on the road. Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 It's LHD, hence the strong price. Its a V8 auto with 93,000 registered in Andora. RHD models are about half that price in the UK. However, if you can find one over here it will be about 7,000€ (hence the UK prices). I'm off out to a french dealer after lunch just to confirm. Having had a 2000 year model which made me very poor IO'm wary. But what else is there if HM wants a high 4 x 4? Quote
peterg Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 QUOTE But what else is there if HM wants a high 4 x 4 Isuzu Trooper, Toyota LandCruiser? There's some discussion on BC re 4x4 and a few recommend the Isuzu Quote
adamnreeves Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I bought a clean 1995 Disco about 12months ago. 3.9EFI V8. Cost me £600. Since been tax and tested and sailed through. Only had one problem which was down to my son jet washing the engine. Otherwise totally reliable starts first time and everytime. Does about 20mpg. Quote
pete g Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 seems very dear when looking for another v8 engine i considered buying whole car because they so cheap any thing for £200 up wards and they looked ok no one wants a v8 and some even had lpg conversions worth more than car Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 At the moment there are no Isuzu or Toyotos on auto trader (lhd that is). We had a V8 disco, great car. no trouble whatsoever. It had a clutch (because I had to pull a well know Sheffield companies furniture lorry up a steep drive with it - the paid for the clutch!), 2 rear shockers and some brake pipes. Would get another if I came across one. We had an Amazon. Only problem was the midget needed a ladder to get in and a parachute to get out. Quote
Jonah Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Pistonheads might be worth a look. They have a LHD section. Quote
RobC Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 can recommend the Hilux! Best car/truck I have EVER owned... Simply awesome Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I have to say that a 17 year old LHD Range Rover V8 is just asking for trouble at £3k. Surely there are better VFM vehicles to do what you want for similar money? Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 The 1993 to 1995 lhd RR are all about £3500 to £4500. I went to a French dealer near here earlier today. A 98, Range Rover 2.5TD (which looked a bit sad) and had 178,000 kms (about 110k miles) was priced at 11,790€. That's why UK models are so expensive. I phoned the UK dealer about the £3450 Range Rover (1993, 90k miles). "I'm enquiring about the lhd Range Rover at £3450, whats the best price you'll take" "The price on the screen, £3450, take it or leave it" "I'll leave it thanks" Phone went down. Several dealers and one private seller are supposed to be ringing back. I've got a bet with myself that none do. I've been ringing one dealer, with a nice web site, all afternoon on the landline and mobile and get no answere from either. Not even an answering machine or voicemail. I'll leave it for a week or two and see what becomes available. Quote
blankczechbook Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 get a uk RHD one and leave it on uk plates. not far to go back for MOT each year. Quote
Norman Verona Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 Adrian, don't mind driving the 7 or the midget with rhd but I don't want HM driving a large 4 x 4 with the wheel on the wrong side. We live in the middle of nowhere and it's bad enough with lhd (pug 806). I looked at PH, I'll take a look on ebay. Quote
