Azzurri Posted August 8, 2002 Posted August 8, 2002 Are all Westies on a Q plate, or only the ones built by the owner, I would prefer one with the true date registration but are they more expensive? but if they are all Q's then it cant be helped. thanks Gav Quote
Mrs Westy Posted August 8, 2002 Posted August 8, 2002 No but a lot of them are. I'm sure someone in the know will give you the proper answer - something to do with you can have the plate of the donor engine if blah new parts blah etc not quite sure. But the simple answer, sans-explanation is no they are not all Q plates Quote
Mike H Posted August 8, 2002 Posted August 8, 2002 Ok I'll have a go: New reg: - all new parts - or one major reconditioned part (eg engine) and the rest new Q reg: - mainly secondhand parts of mixed origin - may be made up of totally reconditioned and some new but does not meet criteria for new reg Age related reg: - one single donor for major components - eg Sierra - friendly vehicle registration office Who built the car has no bearing on the type of registration obtained, just the makeup of the major components (ie engine, g/box etc). hope that helps Mike Quote
Blatman Posted August 8, 2002 Posted August 8, 2002 And apart from being able to put a private plate on it, what difference does it make? A Q plater has the advantage of having to pass the easiest MOT emissions test known to man. Get a car with a later than 1995 reg (er.....I think), and you'll need a cat at MOT time............. Quote
stu999 Posted August 8, 2002 Posted August 8, 2002 The only problem with Q plates is that people have a problem with Q plates. If you get what I mean. Remember, you cant see the number plates when you're driving it! Quote
JonnyBoy Posted August 8, 2002 Posted August 8, 2002 Its only the people that dont know what a q-plate means that frown upon it. Stigma is attatched due to insurance write offs. At the end of the day, the car isnt for them, its for you, and the appreciation of like minded people, so who gives a s**t Quote
westy Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 nout wrong with Q plates - its keeps people guessing how old it is - plus when you have one of these, non kit car owners wont even notice the plate its got - they tend to say "what the #### was that"... Its a useful point by Blatman, I had a real sinking feeling when the MOT was due last year as I knew the car would not pass the emissions tests in its state of tune. But as its a Q plate and the engine is pre '95 (its a '87) it just gets a visual smoke inspection thus it sailed through hth. Quote
Ian Podmore Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 Q plates have nothing to do with MOT regulations. The MOT regulations are only concerned with what is on the V5. i.e. Car built from kit Emissions requirements for cars that have been through the SVA. Cars built from kits with no emissions data on the V5 do NOT need a CAT for the MOT. My CAT now resides on my garage floor and not on my car! Quote
Captain Colonial Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 My CAT now resides on my garage floor and not on my car! Please, no, not again on the subject of cats! Don't tell Hogman!!! Quote
McSpreader Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 This will either be like pis*ing on your chips - or like pouring petrol on your bonfire, but...... I have in the last couple of days had written confirmation from the VI that a CAT and lambda sensor are not required for SVA tests. Only that the emissions limits are met. A well tuned carbs engine may pass - and injection is a doddle. Si Quote
Blatman Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 The caveat being a well tuned pre 1995 engine on carbs might pass. A post 1995 engine on carbs will definitely fail, and by quite some margin. In order to pass the SVA emisions regs, you will have no choice but to fit a cat. Lambda sensor is optional, unless you want to run a closed loop ignition/fuel system, whose main function is to protect the cat.......... Quote
Phssthpok Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 Please, no, not again on the subject of cats! Don't tell Hogman!!! ...did someone mention cats? Quote
james grayley Posted August 10, 2002 Posted August 10, 2002 i know one thing FOR CERTAIN... any AMATEUR BUILT CAR including those which use a brand new engine, cat etc.... never need another emissions test after sva. At mot any amateur built car even one with a current 02 registartion is only subject to a visual smoke test. so post sva u can legally run a car kicking **** out the back on a new registartion and there is nothing anyone can do. this is a little known fact but speak to the sva tester, or the ministry and they will confirm this. most mot testers dont know this either...
