Ian Gratton Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 Hi Folks, just thought I'd let you know that PistonHeads have reviewed the XTR². You can read the article here busy weekend for me and craig . We are finally lifting the chassis down from the stands as that part of the build is complete. Tomorrow we will be able to roll the car out of the garage onto the driveway for the first time. The neighbours will be able to see the fruits of our labour for the first time (loads of people walking by often try to figure out whats going on in the garage). I'll get a photograph - it will be the first time the project has actually looked like a real car LOL We start to install our busa engine tomorrow and sunday - but not before we: * Replace the clutch centre with a billet item from TTS - this supposedley helps the clutch feel a little more progressive like a normal car. * Replace the scratched magnito cover with a new one * remove the normal busa winged sump and install the dry sump pan. Hopefully, if all goes according to plan, we should be able to start the car pretty soon - well - I hope so anyway. Again...we are quite behind on the build diary - I know I know - aren't we always - but I'll attempt to get this all done before the end of the weekend. Quote
moomin Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 Ian/Craig, Do hurry up - there's good chaps... Look forward to the next instalment of the diary. Mines up to date to last weekend, will try to get some more info on there tomorrow evening. Might be pre-occupied as I'm starting the engine this weekend (all being well - come on postie you _can_ deliver me the vital parts tomorrow morning)! Hope to have mp3s of the engine startup on the website after the weekend. Enjoy the weekend's fettling... Dave www.megabird.co.uk Quote
Ian Gratton Posted August 4, 2002 Author Posted August 4, 2002 Hi Dave, glad yours is going well too. The car is now down off the stands - 4 people lifted it down - hey presto . We've opened up the busa engine now too. I replaced the magneto cover yesterday. We've also installed the shaft that drives the dry sump onto the flywheel and replaced that side of the engine cover. The dry sump pump is now also mounted on the engine with its connecting pulley belt too. We're taking off the sump this morning so that should be fun - we will be able to see if there are actually rods and pistons still in the engine. Great fun was had yesterday by turning the engine over using the crank - the balls of tissue paper we have in the exhaust ports pop out as compression within each bore takes place - well - we found it ammusing anyway. Anyway...off to the garage - I have a clutch basket to install. Ian. Quote
Ian Gratton Posted August 4, 2002 Author Posted August 4, 2002 Everything has gone according to plan today. TTS Billet Clutch Centre installed - and lovely it looks too. Winged Sump gone - modifed oil pickup from sump and installed the flat dry sump pan along with all pipework to the new oil pump. We turned the engine over on the starter motor with no plugs - it appears to have compression in each chambe and no nasty noises either The engine is now in the back of the car fastened to the top and bottom engine mounts. Yippee !!! I'll update the build diary later tonight. Ian & Craig. Quote
Al Yupright Posted August 4, 2002 Posted August 4, 2002 Lovely lovely. What're the advantages of the TTS clutch basket btw? Ah, more progressive you say. Got stiffer springs then has it? Theres probably some playing to do with the pivot point on the pedal too, if it's anything like a Megabusa you can make a big improvement just by doing this. Decided on a colour scheme yet then? Quote
Ian Gratton Posted August 4, 2002 Author Posted August 4, 2002 The billet centre is a single part - the std. busa centre is made of two moving parts. I'm not entirely sure what the effects are but we'll know when the car is driven. The clutch springs on the other side of the basket have not been replaced - maybe we should be looking to do this too. I've just added an entire months worth of stuff to the build diary - and its quite time consuming fishing through the 500+MB of photographs we have and deciding was is most suitable. The text is definately there - but some of the images are still uploading as I write. As for the colour - we originally thought of can-am orange - but westfields own car is now orange so we'll be doing something a little 'different'. We are going to keep it under wraps for the time being The engine is actually in - still can't believe it - see for yourselves. Ian. Quote
moomin Posted August 5, 2002 Posted August 5, 2002 Ian/Craig, Just read through the diary update - looks like things are going well, it should be well nice when you get it all sorted. Got mine started yesterday (we won't mention forgetting to connect the earth lead... or #4 spark plug...) and it seemed to run up ok though I didn't run it for long. Shame it doesn't stop without pulling relays out, not too convenient, think I'll have to sort the wiring out... Dave PS I tried that game of firing the tissues across the garage when cranking the engine - much fun! Quote
deadscoob Posted August 5, 2002 Posted August 5, 2002 Now we've got the nasty job of sorting the body out the way it's actually getting entertaining now! Gonna defy the wife tonight and do some owrk on the car.... The engines in properly, so we need to put in the fuel lines, finish the wiring and it's ready to start. Easy huh? Quote
moomin Posted August 5, 2002 Posted August 5, 2002 A walk in the park for men of your means... I'll get some mp3s of my engine onto the website as soon as I can to inspire you. Play it looped into the garage while your working? Good luck with wife defying actions Dave Quote
Ian Gratton Posted August 6, 2002 Author Posted August 6, 2002 More work last night New steering rack mounts arrived and installed. The engine has to come back out again as the handbrake cables run way too close to some of the dry sump pipework. Air filter now installed - did anyone else have to cut the busa rubber throttle body trumpets ? - the two long ones don't fit under the filter. We've ordered some nice TTS replacements today. Ian.
