On the ones I saw it was a good 9 inches (ooh err). The belt case on my zetec is a good 4 inches back from the nose cone. I have a pickie somewhere...I'll try to find it

These cars must have the extra wide transmission tunnels which allow the bellhousing to live in the tunnel... only downside is the footwell width you sacrafice I guess.  I with my chassis was like that... :-(

Matt, I'm absolutely amazed by your last post. Your original query was as to the virtues of a pinto engine or other wise, and I think chrisbin got this one bang on, you pays your money and you takes your choice, and you should be reasonably impressed my most, in the hands of a capable driver. But to be disapointed with a drive in a well driven V8 is very suprising. When you approach the 180 ish BHP mark in a Westy things are usually happening fairly rapidly. Just what does it take to light your fuse, and what are you used to driving?

Your right enough about the extra wide transmission tunnel thing. What Westfield seem to have done is make the passenger footwell narrower to accomodate this as the drivers side seems fine for me. Bear in mind that I am comparing this with a c******m and you have to have size 4 feet to drive them it seems.

Matt what were the problems with the car that you didn't like it?

If it was that it wasn't quick enough, then you will have to look at a seriously modified Pinto for it to be faster.  My Pinto is putting out around 155bhp and I find it sluggish, took it to the local rolling road the week after I got it and explained that it felt like it had 85bhp, it had 113bhp@wheels :o  If you are used to cars with Impreza / Evo performance then any westie with less than 200bhp is likely to feel underpowered.

Robertio,

If you have only 113 bhp @ the wheels then then you are producing around 135 bhp @ the flywheel.

The noise wasn't as thunderous as say a TVR...

I think this very much depends on the spec of the installation, the induction and the exhaust systems...before I bought mine, I had test drives in a few V8s...one had a bog standard 3.5, one had an injected 3.9 and the one I bought has a 4.3 with side exit exhausts and carbs...all of them sounded "different"...mine has a TVR Power engine, but doesn't sound like a normal TVR...obviously it sounds much better
