samcooke Posted July 26, 2002 Posted July 26, 2002 Fitted my new alternator yesterday - fiddly b******d job - went out for a quick blat to make sure it was OK and have broken something. b*****k*. There's a hefty rattle from the top end, particularly when given a bootful at low revs and the exhaust pops and bangs like a good un on the overrun, but not in a sexy 1960s gt car type way. My random guess is that a tappet has shaken itself loose. If so, what the heck do I set the gap to and where? The engine is a 1700(1696?)cc xflow with high comp pistons, a piper 285, twin weber 40s and the valvetrain thing has double springs and some sexy pink anodising. Any help would be appreciated, and if it's more serious do you think it's safe to drive 20 miles to my nearest garage? Sam Quote
samcooke Posted July 26, 2002 Author Posted July 26, 2002 x a million. Got home and checked it and it's just a blown exhaust gasket thing where the block meets the manifold. Any tips for changing it? Is it as easy as buying the gaskets and bolting up? Looks like the rear thread in the block has a hairline crack already from over tightening... Quote
furtive Posted July 26, 2002 Posted July 26, 2002 Sam No idea! and sorry to hijack your thread, but did you notice much of a difference going from single downdraft carb to twin webbers? Quote
Phssthpok Posted July 26, 2002 Posted July 26, 2002 Err... Unbolt manifold Replace manifold gasket - available from every car parts shop in the world. Bolt up manifold and start up your engine. Should take about 20 mins - including the time to buy the gasket. Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted July 26, 2002 Posted July 26, 2002 At a guess I bet it’s the middle branch of the exhaust manifold(tadts) Quote
