dombanks Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 anyone know a decent sloegin recipe? Quote
nearly done Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Dom, loads on the net.But my own favourite involves a bottle of cheap Gin,a pint of ripe Sloe`s and about 250g of sugar.dangler the Sloe`s both ends with a needle, stick the whole lot in a demi john and leave for at lest 2 months shaking reguarly.Strain and bottle once the juice has leeched out of the Sloe`s.As a small aside cherry vodka is just as nice using similar amounts of cherry`s. Sit by open fire/woodburner and enjoy. Cheers,Sean Quote
Nick PC Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 The above recipe is spot on for a good warming drink by the fireside but need to start in October. Quote
PeP Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 My parents have been making it for years by the same method and it,s blooming lovely. Quote
a4gom Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 danglering the sloes is a royal pain in the a**, i gently rub mine up a fine grater, much quicker / easier. when its done there is still plenty of flavor to be had from the berries so i use them again with either vodka or brandy. Quote
stephenh Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 I make both sloe gin and damson gin. I cant be doing with danglering them. Just put them in the freezer for a week or two, then take them out and thaw them quickly, in a warm room or even in the microwave. Hey presto, the skins go soft or even split. Quote
F20 Powered Rush Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 Tradition says do not harvest sloes until after 1st frost, but nowadays so few frosts until late winter, so harvest end of Oct place in freezer for a week as this helps the tannins to break down. Then thaw and abraid the skins place in demi john add sugar as above, i also add a few drops of almond essence, Add an air breather to the neck of demi john to release fermentation over pressure.Place in dark area such as airing cupboard and shake once a week for two months, then every other week for two months, then once a month for two months then rack it off, leave for a week then rack it off again, week later rack it off and pour into a decanter or gin bottle, and enjoy. Really needs at least 10 months between harvest and consumption, to be at its best. Damson/Cherry/Plum/Bullace can all be done the same way. Quote
dombanks Posted December 24, 2009 Author Posted December 24, 2009 thanks guys, i found so many its good to hear ones that people know work. I picked my sloe's months ago and have had them in the freezer but had forgotten them. they were a little mushy when defrosted but ive givenit a go and have 2 1/2 L pints of the stuff which hopefully will be nice and sorted by next winter i used morrisons premium gin @43% and £11 per litre which also makes a nice g&t with some lime and ice happy christmas all Quote
Terry Everall Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 We make damson gin with cheapest gin, damsons from tree in garden and suger. Bang it all in a sealable jar and leave until it clears some months later Then chill and drink! Quote
F20 Powered Rush Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 You can also re use the sloe waste either as a week sloe gin (pink gin) girls love this or mix it in with fresh. Quote
