Hammy Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Back in January I bought a second hand Diesel Mondeo with 6 months Ford Direct warrenty. About June time I had the aux belt tensior replaced after it started to give the death rattle- all paid for no problem. Guess what its gone again 4000miles later and Ford are not interested - out of warrenty - not covered for faulty part, go away etc. I'm guessing there was some under lying problem that wasn't fixed ( e.g crank pulley fault ?) . I'm looking at a £600 bill for new belt , tensioner and possibly crank pulley. What can I do ? Quote
speedy jon Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 working in a ford dealership myself id say if the part was changed in june this year your still within fitted in service warranty which is a year from when it was fitted. when you had the tensioner replaced was the crank pulley replaced too? Hammy Posted November 23, 2009 Author Posted November 23, 2009 Pulley *wasn't* changed at the same time- I'll be on the phone about the "fitted in service bit in the morning"- Quote
speedy jon Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 i found this on the ford info system we use in work. Should a customer express concern about a drumming noise from the accessory drive belt with the engine at idle, the probable cause is a high accessory drive belt excitation caused by crankshaft vibration being transmitted into the accessory drive belt drive. The drumming noise only occurs during idle and should disappear at engine speeds above 1000 rpm. To rectify this concern a revised crankshaft pulley together with a new accessory drive belt and accessory drive belt tensioner MUST be installed, without exception. The reason for replacing the accessory drive belt and the accessory drive belt tensioner is because they will both deteriorate after prolonged exposure to belt flap Quote

pistonbroke Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 I would be asking why this has failed again so soon after being replaced , would also ask what warranty they (ford) give with there service parts (SHould expect 12 months ) Then go see what trading standards have to say if you get no agreeable responce Quote
DAVE.B Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 I have worked for Mercedes and Porsche and parts fitted under warranty are only covered untill the expiry of the warranty.I know it sounds stupid, but this is what happens. If it was me i would contact Fords customer services directly, stating dates/mileages etc and ask for a "goodwill claim"seeing that it is a known fault and from the information you have the pulley should have been replaced last time which in turn could have caused the repeat failure. Best of luck Quote
carpetstu Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Put the car back in their showroom.. Don't wait for the doors to open though! Quote

JeffC Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I would be asking why this has failed again so soon after being replaced , would also ask what warranty they (ford) give with there service parts (SHould expect 12 months ) Then go see what trading standards have to say if you get no agreeable responce just had something similar with a Fiesta Tdci I sold my nephew, had 1 months warranty left and the alternator packed in, no problem Ford replaced foc. 6 weeks later it went again, I told him to take it back to Ford who told him the alternator was fcked and gave him a bill for 100 for telling him and wanted £400 to fix it, argued in reception but they insisted there is no warranty on warranty parts, spoke to Ford customer services who also confirmed this trading standards didnt want to know Quote
Hammy Posted November 24, 2009 Author Posted November 24, 2009 Even worse I was told that If I had took the Ford sure warranty out myself the parts have a 12 months warrenty, if (as was) the garage took out the warranty to supply with their cars, then parts not covered after warrenty expires. Little known fiddle of the motor industry I guess - nice to know we still have to bend over for em. Remember the name "Ford unsure" Quote
Big R Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I work in the warranty business, although nothing to do with cars. The first replacement part was covered under the cars warranty and only received the balance of the cars warranty. If however, you had paid to have the part changed out with the cars warranty, you should receive the 12 month warranty attached to the spare part. It’s not too complicated, but a salesman is never going to tell you that. Quote

I would still be talking to the trading standards people about this , they will advise if the repair garage is still liable for replacement parts failure , the things must by law be fit for purpose and of a suitable quality and last a reasonable time before failure . Not much argument needed to prove your point I would have thought Quote
