chazpowerslide Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Every time I boot up my pc I get a window come up with the following message C:\Users\Chaz\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS0C7E\setup\Status\ The only way I can get rid of it is via the task manager. If I click on Install in the window another window comes up saying "Configuring Status" the progress bar comes up and then another window appears saying that the network resourse is not available and try again. The PC (on Vista) is termainally slow on boot up and shut down, I have AGV installed and working correctly all scans are up to date. This apparantly a problem with HP update but I can't solve it despite searching and following the recommended solutions. Can any of you chaps help out? It's driving me mad and making a grands worth of PC virtually US. Thanks. Chaz. Quote
Tom Frankland (T3OMF) Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Have you tried to del the folder called 7zS0C7E?? its only a temp folder or other than what anyone can come up with, just rebuild it with Windows 7..... much better Quote
kitemark Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 any chance of a screen grab to show what kind of box this message appears in. be a bit easier to suggest possible fixes then. mark Quote
Blatman Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I agree with tfwebdesign. Stop the process as you have been doing, then browse to the temp folder and delete the file. BUT... when you hit delete, make sure you have your finger on the [shift] key. That will delete the thing without placing it in the recycle bin I have seen something similar before as well. It was a file loaded up after playing / registering for the National Lottery. Not me I hasten to add... the problem was that the users profile was maxed out by the process and the machine refused to allow a log off until the file had been cleared. It was a royal PITA. And yeah, dump Vista... Quote
chazpowerslide Posted November 19, 2009 Author Posted November 19, 2009 I can't find the temp file to delete, however un-installing the software for my HP Photosmart D7200 printer has stopped the config status window appearing. When I re-installed the full software package the issue re-appears. I'm about to try and re-install the basic printer software package and see if this works. I'll keep you posted. How do I do a screen grab BTW Chaz. Quote
Nomexnomad Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Its definately the printer software. uninstall it all, then download the driver from the HP website (latest) and re-install. Be sure when re-installing to use the directory it offers you and don't be tempted to use your own, (software drivers can be touchy to this) Finally for the actual software, if its not working or your having trouble make sure its set for adminstrator rights for Vista access. You can do this by right clicking on the icon and searching in properties for admin rights. If its an older printer and the driver is old it probably won't be recognized properly by vista. Quote
chazpowerslide Posted November 19, 2009 Author Posted November 19, 2009 Right, the issue seemed to be with the full install of the driver software. I un-installed the software and all it's associated components and then re-installed it from the HP website, this did not fix the issue. I then un-installed the lot, downloaded the basic driver pack and installed that. The printer all works ok and on boot up the status window has gone The positive thing is that the boot up is a lot quicker now.......... I'm seriously thinking of either going to Windows 7 or reverting back to XP. Is Windows 7 really a big improvement on Vista? Chaz. Quote
Stuart Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Have XP Pro on both my machines but SWMBO has just got a Windows 7 laptop - I can use it fairly well and it doesn't p*ss me off like Vista did. Except for the fact the the Run command still isn't there. Quote

Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 So what's the answer you techie guys, is Windows 7 worth going for ? Quote
Captain Colonial Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 On the subject of start up choking problems, one of the pieces of free software I've installed on about a dozen computers of friends and family is here: Quick Startup It allows you to select which programs start at Windows start up. I used it to stop annoying background programs that eat memory like printer utilities, QuickTime, RealTime, etc that do practically nothing and slow your computer down. Had very good results and the price was right as well (free). Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Yes Nick .......... if you're running XP leave it for a month or two to let big updates / upgrades roll through if you're using XP If you're on Vista then do it asap Quote
