JamesD Posted June 10, 2002 Posted June 10, 2002 Currently I am in the process of putting together a 2.0L Zetec for my SEiW. From previous advice I have been looking at installing a 1.8L Zetec Water Pump to make sure the water circulates in the right direction. However...my local motor factors quotes the same part for the 1.8 and 2.0L Zetec pump. I have managed to get a multi-vee type pulley to replace the one currently on the 2.0L. Have I got something wrong here, am I asking for the wrong part? Is it a different Zetec variant I am looking for? Any pointers would be appreciated... JD Quote
Westfieldman Posted June 10, 2002 Posted June 10, 2002 1800 escort Zetec water pump as far as I know. Paul. Quote
damianc Posted June 10, 2002 Posted June 10, 2002 Agreed. The mondeo has a Dr Seuss fashioned array of pulleys and idlers for the aircon resulting in the back of the belt driving the water pump. The escort has a simpler arrangement & drives the other way. Check the angles of the pump vanes at your motor factors against the original 2.0 pump. The 1.8 pump is also a tad smaller Quote
Richard M Green Posted June 12, 2002 Posted June 12, 2002 As it's a centrifugal water pump, the direction of rotation of the pump is not critical - even if the vanes point the 'wrong' way the water won't get pump backwards, it will still be pumped 'forward' but with reduced pumping efficiency. Arguably since Zetecs are not borderline on cooling this may not be a problem...... BTW Has your engine already got the extra oil spray nozzles that cool the underside of the pistons? Can't remember if they are standard on all 2 litres. Regards all Richard Quote
rkenyon Posted June 12, 2002 Posted June 12, 2002 BTW Has your engine already got the extra oil spray nozzles that cool the underside of the pistons? Can't remember if they are standard on all 2 litres. Yes, according to zetecinside.com all 2L have the oil sprays. Quote
David_East Posted June 12, 2002 Posted June 12, 2002 James, We did NOT change the pump on our 2.0L Zetec. As was pointed out earlier it is a centrifugal pump and although the efficiency is reduced, it is not sufficient to be significant. Water circulation is still in the same direction. Our engine has the modified cooling sytem and behaves exactly as designed and intended . There is no discernable difference in temeprature and operation between egines using the modifed cooling system whether fitted with 2.0 L or 1800 water pumps. Changing the pump is a consideration, if you are going to use the modifed cooling sytem. The 1800 pump, by virtue of the angle of its inlet pipe, relative to the engine block, allows you to use a modifed Mondeo bottom hose to connect the thermostat bypass to the water pump inlet. Details are on our web site. Quote
JamesD Posted June 12, 2002 Author Posted June 12, 2002 Thanks for all the replies... I have decided to get the Escort 1.8L Water Pump as it opens all the options to me... Plus my existing water pump has so much calcification on the outlet pipe I can't get it all of, even with a wire brush!! JD Quote
