Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 ok so cross GTR off the list - a Touran it is Quote
housebeautician Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 someone saw him coming! 11 grand, he could have bought my westy for that. Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 how would your westy fit onto the front of his car though Quote
Frosty Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Pretty alarming stuff, and not the first astronomical repair bill for one of these I've heard of either. I pick mine up in less than 3 weeks now. Next years insurance premium will no doubt be a joy!!! If a small tap like that costs 11k, a 3 panel accident will be a write off! It will be very interesting to see if prices come down, or if cars get written off left right and centre because they are uneconomical to fix. Quote
FW500 Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 I'm giving GTR's a flippin wide berth on the road - it cost a fraction of that when I ploughed into the back of a Porsche. Quote
cast iron Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 With modern and evolving safety systems how do you know none of this tech isnt hiding undet the bonnet of many a new car? not just a Nissan? Remeber when Ford Sierras were launched and a 5mph impact wrote the car off because the crumple zones were too soft? Quote

Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 With modern and evolving safety systems how do you know none of this tech isnt hiding undet the bonnet of many a new car? not just a Nissan? Remeber when Ford Sierras were launched and a 5mph impact wrote the car off because the crumple zones were too soft? Audi's Proco-Ten system was one of the classics for this. Smallish impact, oopes where did the engine, dash board, steering wheel etc. go. Quote

matt_c Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 *I'm struggling to accept that cost 11k to fix. If it is true then I certainly won't be going anywhere near one. *Unless the owner is a complete mug. Quote
RichP Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 It's been suggested that the most effective safety system would be a steel spike sticking out of the steering wheel at your chest. Cheap and effective. Not too many people would crash then! People want their cars to save their lives (or the lives of others / pedestrians etc) when involved in a collision, yet don't want to pay the cost of the protective equipment involved, all of which costs a fortune when it has to be replaced after a collision, often driving up the cost of insurance premiums. This is perhaps an extreme case, but it's not too difficult to write off a car once the instrument panel, steering wheel, and perhaps seats and headlinings need replacing after the airbags have gone off. And that's aside from any bodywork damage. You could argue that the presence of all this safety equipment increase complacency and reduces driving standards. Surely the best solution is to improve driving standards and hopefully prevent the accident in the first place? It seems easy to get nicked for speeding, but you rarely see anyone stopped for driving like a complete to**er which is very commonplace round my way anway! A change of focus is needed IMHO. Quote
