oh i'm not the most mechanical person in the world so try to keep any replies in a total novice language. thanks

oh one more thing. How easy / hard  is building a Westi for someone practical but not (yet) mechanical?

Hey wosser. I am i  the same boat as you? I am picking my rolling chassis kit up on saturday 8th june, i have been doin loads of researce on engines and a complete ready to run engine is lookin at around £1500, this sound cheap but the engine could be goosed and only last 5 minutes. I have decided to take my time and find the money to but a recon from westy just to make sure that the thing works and if it goes wrong i can ship it back and get a new one.

All the best

My local breakers sells Zetecs for £250/£350 but you still need all the other bits look at this list of bits as a guide

The parts I used to convert a 1.8 Zetec to type nine gearbox

You will need a spigot bearing this fits in the crank shaft Ford part No.1596468.cost £3.20

Escort flywheel Ford part No.1034879 should be with engine.

Flywheel bolts Ford part No.6952658 cost £0.06 need six replace these bolts to be safe each time you remove the flywheel

Clutch kit exchange Ford part No.5029603 £57.21

Clutch release bearing Q’Hazel CCT 133.  £20.00 about

Clutch release bearing arm for a Type 9 try the factory for this as I used an alloy bellhousing from SPC tel 01527894232 and the arm had to be cut and welded shorter

Clutch cable Q’Hazel QCC1057  try the factory for this £7.00 about

Starter motor Ford part No.5027644 cost £78.74

If you ge the gearbox from the scrap yard get the bellhousing to gearbox bolts as these are a none industry standard bolt

The bolts engine to bellhousing are standard 8.8 HT M10 x 40mm socket set screws and spring and plain washers

I got some carbs and an ECU from Raceline second hand and they work ok for £550 inc a manifold and vat postage etc.

The only things I can add to the list are an alternator bracket and you'll need to do some sump modifications. Westfield do both of these. 100 quid plus for the alternator bracket and 200 or so for the sump mods from memory. Raceline do a very nice baffled sump which is shallow, holds the full 5 litres of oil and works very well. A shade more expensive than the Westfield mods but worth it in my opinion. About 300 + vat if I recall although it has been 2.5 years. Check their web site - url below.

You might want to think about a remote oil filter housing as the oil filter ends up very close to the steering column and you have to fit a very small filter to get it to fit.

Another "nice to have" is the Raceline water rail but by no means essential.

www.raceline.co.uk - they also do carb kits, ignition boxes, etc and tuning parts should you want to up the power a bit.

You also need to budget for a red top fuel pump and pressure regulator to run on carbs

www.thinkauto.co uk for oil parts including pick up plate and remote filter mounting. I also fitted a heat exchanger to cool the oil but this is overkill unless you are planning to tune the engine.

Red tops pumps are (or, at least my last 5 have been.....) rubbish. For anything under 200bhp, a solid state Facet will be adequate, and reliable. Or get a Webber pump, which are also adequate and reliable.........
