Room between rear bulkhead and boot box?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Made the trip to the Westfield factory yesterday and am getting close to ordering the kit...

One thing I didn't check is if there is room for speakers behind the rear cockpit panel. I'm thinking one above the other between the seats - a la Dodge Viper.

I've found a great little marine-grade amp/speakers kit that you can plug an ipod directly into, thus negating the need for a head unit. The speakers are water-resistant.

I know this goes against the spirit of the style of car, but I want to use this as a mostly daily driver and want some music for time spent in traffic.

Any thoughts?

from memory there is a diaganol chassis brace behind the panel between the seats

you wont hear it TBH - I would go for the ipod with headphones if you really want music on the move

I think the car already attracts enough unwanted attention without having music blaring out - that is just my view though

good luck  :t-up:

Im with Cleggy on this one wait and see how loud it is before

putting in speakers, I go for the ipod with earphones, no problem.

plus the ally helps with rigidity so cutting it about is not recommended

Speakers in a Westy??  :0 Shouldn't be allowed. The music comes out of the exhaust and air filter!  :p  :p  :D

Invest the money in some proper custom made ear plugs with inbuilt speakers. Or get nice noise cancelling headphones which would be much better than speakers drowned out  by engine and induction noise.

what the devil? Speakers in a Westy? Nnnnnoooooooooooooo.

Agree with Cleggy, if you don't want to enjoy the delightful music from the exhaust use your iPod and earphones.

You don't want to turn it into a chav mobile where everyone in the country can here you coming a zillion miles away by the booming of the bass!

is this a wind up ?

when you went to the factory, did you actually go for a drive in a car or did you sit in the car park wondering what it might be like sitting in traffic jams ??

Twin 45's and a Dunnell exhaust sing my tunes   lol

Yeah... I just sat in my car and imagined after a 3.5 hour drive.... isn't that what everybody does... drive 7 hours to and from a factory just to sit in a car park and dream?

If you read the post PROPERLY, I am talking about having some music while stuck in traffic, when the engine is idling. The music won't be loud.

Unlike most owners I am going to use my Westie almost daily, even to commute to work and when I am not using it, my wife will. This - as a result of living in London - means the car will spend a fair share of time stuck in traffic and some background music will make things nicer.

So back to the original, simple question: Will speakers fit?

The question was answered as much as it is possible to be answered by the first 2 responders - thread closed.

oh dear.............

Rather than build a Westfield out of an MX5 I would suggest you just keep it as an MX5 for your intended uses? (An MX5 is a far more practical option for everyday use and when you actually get it on an open road handles everybit as well as a Westfiled but has a slightly different driving experience)

I'm really struggling to see what fun there is to be had sat in London traffic in a Westfield - maybee you could enlighten us? (I don't think music will make it much more fun!)

I know you're new here but please don't take the above responses (or mine below) as a sign of rudeness.  Most of us have used and lived with Westys for a long time - over that time we've come to understand what they are good for and not good for - we're just offering advice and the benefit of experience.

I agree - an MX5 would be much more suited to your planned use.  You say you're going to use it daily?  Even in the rain and snow?  If you reply stating that you'll just put the hood up - be aware 99% of people NEVER use the hoods - it's an emergency item only.  With the hood up a Westy turns from the best open top car there is to the wort there is - noisy, lack of head room, windows steam up all the time, visibilty atrocius - a Westy with the hood up is truly awful.  In fact, I can't even get in one with the hood up.

Westfields are wasted in towns - open a roads/twisty b roads are where they rule.

Speakers in a Westy?  Isn't that like putting 17" wheels on?  Ahem.........

I'll answer your original question - will the speakers fit?

Yes.

But that's like saying can I jam my dangler in a garden shredder?  Yes - but you'd be mad to want to.

I would be inclined to ignore the people in here with unneccesary negative comments - I do

they may have a point in what they are saying but there are ways and means of saying things to people

the guy came in here asking a fair question - do we really need to be so down on people just because there ideas dont fit in with ours/yours
