Asterix Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Would like to be able to model a plan view of the turning circles of various lengths of tow vehicles and trailers. Anyone know of any apps (flash programs?) that can do this? Quote

stephenh Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I haven't got a programme, but the answer to you question is (as so often): it all depends. What I mean is that an HGV articulated unit can turn in a space which is quite a bit narrower than the overall length of the outfit. How you may say? The answer is they shuffle the outfit back and forward until they end up with the unit jack-knifed at rightangles, with the trailer across the narrowest dimension of the yard. they can then drive the tractor unit forwards, or backwards as required, and turn the trailer in its own length. # However if we are talking about a car or van towing a caravan or trailer such as a B J car transporter, then if you attempt the same trick you'll find the rear quarter of you tow tug coming into contact with the facing front corner of your trailer long before you get anywhere near at right angles. The angle which you can achieve between tug and trailer will dictate your turning circle in proportion to the length of your trailer, and that will in turn be dictated by the length of your drawbar. The longer the drawbar, the tighter the turning circle before car comes into contact with trailer. So the answer is that it is most unlikely that you can plot the circle in plan view using a simple programme IF we are talking of private vehicle/trailer combos rather than commercial artic units. Mark Stanton Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Pete I have a programme its called Auto-Track and it runs in Auto-Cad all dongled and fully licensed as well Tracks all U.K., european and even US vehicles Quote
Asterix Posted August 5, 2009 Author Posted August 5, 2009 Front drive of new house is like... . I'd like to model the easiest way to drive in (and out) a 7.5m x 2.2m campervan and a minno sprint shuttle (5.53m x 2.3m). Van is a Fiat Ducato 2.8...will provide wheelbase dims later. This will help me select the best parking places, whether to widen (or relocate) the gate (currently 3m wide starting from the top left corner) and help me design where the pretty bits of the front drive will be (her indoors' flower beds). Garry, of course I'm taking the pills, I've got kids. Quote

Mark Stanton Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Mais oui do you want me to do some tracking email me info what you posted and I'll drop into cad Quote
dhutch Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 What you want to do is hitch it all up on a muddy day, reverse it up the garden and then mark out 6inches from all the tracks left, and vola you have you driveway marked out! Quote
