How can I tell if a car has wide-track front?

Thinking of looking at a couple, no clear answer if it's a wide-track or not from the owner - how can you tell?

(in the absence of any supporting paperwork of course)

Pardon the ignorance, I've not owned one of these before!

Cheers

Hi Ash.

OK so Terry is technically correct... but if you are talking about a wide-bodied car, if the front track is the same as the rear track, that is widetrack - i.e. the standard track is narrower at the front than the rear on an SE(i)W.

moom.

'Front same as rear' - right - got it - thank you for that

Also assuming the seller claims the suspension is of Westfield manufacture and is relatively modern, the wide track wishbones are fabficated from oval tube, so as to present a slimline crosssection viewed from the front of the car. The standard (narrow track) wishbones are fabricated from round section tube.

Sorry, Terry's right, you need to measure it! There are different degrees of widetrack, depending on manufacturer, and if you happen to look at a Sierra SDV car the rear track is wider than standard, so just comparing front to rear may not work

Plus odd rear wheel offsets might make it less apparent.

In fact, rather than measure the track, you would be far better off measuring the length of the bottom wishbones - as track can alter considerably with differing wheel offsets.

Just need to know the dims of a standard wishbone now!!! :D

There really never is a simple answer is there?!!   :D

Thanks though, all noted

It's a little academic if I get the one I'm hopefully going to see on Friday though, as it DOES - and lots more.  Here's hoping it doesn't get sold tonight!

Then....I'll be all over this place with a million *really* stupid questions [far more naive than this one]   :sheep:

as long as you can put up with the stupid answers you will be fine in here  :D

Good luck with the viewing.

There's a really excellent FAQ section on here, which is well worth a read and a delve through; there's some extremely knowledgeable and well thought through replies in there.

Sadly the search funtion can be a bit tempremental these days, but never the less it's always worth having a good rummage. It might not answer your questions directly, but will usually give you a good steer.  ;)  :D Plus when you do ask a question, you can quote some of the results you've already seen and won't get bombarded with "do a search" replies

Cheers!  Yes, I've been in there trawling the 'do's and don'ts' type threads for when looking to buy a Westie already - have scanned a few more and there's a wealth of good, useful info within - looking forward to delving into it in more detail - and more importantly, when it becomes more relevant!

I'm very excited now....

I am now a Westfield owner (well...I will be in a few hours!)   :t-up:

(I just bought Rob Marshalls [very tidy] SEiW)

Let the stupid questions commence!     :sheep:
