Which Alternator for CVH?

Recommended Posts

I have a CVH engined Westfield and I'm fairly convinced that my alternator has failed.

Over the past week, my battery charging light started to glow very dimly at idle speed and is now on all the time. Initially it would go out at about 3,500 revs but now, no amount of revs will cause the light to go out.

Voltage across the terminals when at fast idle is only 12.49 and I have checked/replaced all earths/connections etc.

I've also tried disconnecting the battery whilst the engine is running - and the engine stops. I'm told that this is a good sign that the alternator has failed.

I'm now looking to replace the alternator with either a reconditioned unit or one from a scrap yard, but I'm unsure which one I need. The current alternator looks like one you would find on a mid 80s Ford and has a sticker on it showing the following information:

Part No. AN11

Batch No. 3573        J96

45amps

The car was factory built in 1996. Would Westfield have used a brand new one or a reconditioned one? is it crucial that I find an exact replacement or is there a bit of tolerance with the output?

Does anyone have any idea what type of alternator I'll need?

Muchas gracias in advance....

Hi there,

I am pretty familar with the CVH engine having been an RS Turbo nut for around 8 years and there are various types of alternator that were fitted to the escorts/fiestas etc, the only real difference i found is the size of the drive wheel and the type of electrical connector (bladed/bolt type). The type fitted to my westy has the bladed connectors but looks dimensionally the same as the one on my RS which has a slighlty higher amp output due to the need to run the electrical system etc. Do you have any pics of yours?

Regards

Chris

as Chris says a Photo would help

Just had a quick look and there are about 4 different Original manufacturers listed for the CVH Alternator

Have removed the alternator and taken these pics. It look like a reconditioned unit to me as there are no manufacturers identifying marks whatsoever. Will get it tested later today.

And what a palava that was just to get it off - nearly undid the all the bolts on one of the engine mounts in trying to remove the heat shield - before I realised it was a separate componant!!

Perksy, you can go straight to the front of the Naafi queue. You're spot on, it is indeed a Lucas A115 - a right hand flat back to be precise. I took it to a specialist alternator repair place for testing and he told me what sort it was straight away and that its main application was in Minis and Allegro :0

It was indeed duff and have ordered a new one.

Many thanks for your input.  ;)

It look very simular to the ones fitted to the x-flow models (mk2 fiestas/Mk3/4 escorts) the one on my CVH look slightly different on the electrical connector side ???
