chazpowerslide Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 To cut a long story short(ish) I had Norton 360 on my laptop which it then proceeded to kill, the machine was shipped with Norton Interned Security 2006. At some stage prior to this the wireless stopped working shortly after installing 360. Due to difficulties with recovering the data on the hard drive which would be lost when doing a full system recovery I fitted a new (bigger) hard drive. I then did a full system recovery and hey presto the wireless was up an running again. I downloaded (wirelessly) AVG and some software from Race technology, all fine. As the subscription for NIS had run out and I did not want any conflicts with AVG I then uninstalled NIS and the wireless stopped working. I can't find the wireless adapter on the device manager. I have used the Application and Driver Recovery tab on System Recovery to re-install the driver which has been done successfully but still no wireless.......... System is XP home pro. Any advice would be most welcome. Chaz. Quote
RichP Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Start - settings - network connections Is your wireless network connection showing "enabled" or "disabled"? If disabled, right click and select enable. Edit - You can select "Repair" as well which might help. Check "properties" (again through the right click) and ensure that on the "wireless networks" tab it's set for windows to configure your wireless network. Otherwise, not sure! Quote
chazpowerslide Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 It's not showing anything, it's as if is completely gone from the system. Chaz. Quote
jsawyer86 Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 1. kick it 2. drown it 3. burn it! if that fails check to see if there is a function button on the lap top to turn on the wireless reciever (have to turn mine on every start up). also see if you can find a diagnostics button in the windows networks menu, it may find and even fix a fault ( resetting the network adaptors usualy sorts mine out). langy Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 have a look and see if you have a switch on the side of your laptop that turns the wireless on and off, some Dell's have them. Quote
chazpowerslide Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 There is a switch and it's in the on position. The thing is that I can't see anything on the device manager to indicate the hardware is actually there, I have re-installed the driver, that shows up on add/remove programmes and I've gone in and used the repair option but still no wireless. I'll try to restore to a previous date and see if it comes back up. Chaz. Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 sounds like its down to anti virus/firewall settings to me preventing a connection - check them and if all else fails uninstall virus software and re-install that's what i would do anyway or you could try as suggested above first - system restore to a previous date - you should not loose any work so dont worry about that Quote
chazpowerslide Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 Network connections settings only show the LAN connection, the HP wireless help does not start up at all when you click the icon. I'm now doing a system restore................. Chaz. Quote
