Pinto Boy Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I’ve been moving some personal folders in Vista Home Basic and got a bit muddled. Please could someone post the contents of the desktop.ini files from the folders: Documents, Pictures, Music, Much appreciated Quote
Richgm Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 A quick search of my laptop (Vista home premium) shows no "desktop.ini" files. Quote
Pinto Boy Posted July 4, 2009 Author Posted July 4, 2009 Thanks for looking. They are hidden files which contain information about folders - icons, contents etc - which Windows uses. They can be seen by changing the options in Explorer: Organise >Folder and serach options > View. Then unselect "Hide protected oprtating system files" However I wouldn't want anyone who doesn't usually change these options to do this. Quote
Richgm Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Luke, I run with the options like that anyway. I don't like windows hidding things from me. I also searched for "*.ini" which still didn't show the files up. Quote
Richgm Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Found it. Vista search has another check box you have to tick as well. Documents desktop.ini: [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21770 IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-112 IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll IconIndex=-235 Quote

Richgm Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Don't forget every sub folder will have it's own ini file too. Quote
Pinto Boy Posted July 4, 2009 Author Posted July 4, 2009 Thanks Rich, do you have the info for the Downloads folder also please? I've been moving some of the personal folders to a different partition & then copying in data from my old PC. I'd got Vista confused so it lost the icons for some folders & listed different folders depending on where you were looking! I had a folder whose display name was different form the 'object name' in the properties. Think I'll leave well alone in future Quote
Richgm Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 No Problem mate. Your not the only one who has these little problems. Not so long ago I decided to wipe the HDD on my computer and give it a fresh install of XP. Couldn't install XP and couldn't work out why. After many, many days of trying various solutions finally tracked it down to a ropey memory simm. Took it out and hey presto XP installs. Since then I've learned that backing up before doing anything clever (No matter how simple it seems) is always a good idea. Quote

Troubleshooting the System Restore tool in Windows XP Ta but done all that and googled everything else and done that but still doesn't b****y work. Don't need to system restore just now (and worked around the problem that led me to discover this problem) but one day I will. Quote
