Matt Williams Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I picked up a second Audi recently and I am disapoibted with the economy, I have done about 1800 miles in it so far, it has covered 72k but I am unbable to get much more than 45mpg. I do long runs and recently used our a4 quattro 19tdi and managed a respectable 48mpg on the same run. The disapointing bit is that the a6 is lighter and should accoding to the specs do better. Has anyone got any views as to where I should be looking. Both are 130ps tdi although the a4 is slightly higher torque. The second point is the the gearbox whines a little in all gears apart from 5th, the a4 does not and none of the other VAG stuff I have had did. It gets noisier with heat e.g. the more miles the noisier it gets but after about 30 miles levels. It has a warranty so I am to too concerned at the moment but I was just wondering if there is anything else I could be looking at or is it a known fault? Quote
JeffC Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 are you getting the figures from the computer or working it tank to tank, Ive had as much as 58 on the computer on an A6 but they can be optomistic, Ive also never had 48 from a quattro If its the 6 speed A6 for some reason they are not as quick and not as economical either Gearbox"s shouldnt be noisy, was the mileage warrented when you bought the car? fsh ? fwiw Ive got an A6 avant coming in tonight with 200k and had one last week with 190k and both silent on the box Quote
Matt Williams Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 5 speed box in the a6 and tank to tank, for both. A6 is one owner Full Audi service history with printouts and invoices and mileage warranted so I am pretty sure nothing is untoward. From tank to tank I get about 630-640 miles and using about 63 lts. It is mint inside and out and looks as I would suspect a car of its age and mileage should. My old passat driven the same was doing 750 plus on 58lts although this was the earlier engine. Yep A4 suprised me at 48 I was not expecting that however driven a bit harder and it soon drops to 42-43. Matt Quote
Matt Williams Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Any idea how much an a6 gearbox costs? Quote
Jenko Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I have an A6 (Saloon) TDi 130 sport.........52 plate I do a fiar few miles (30K / Year), and its consistantly hits 47mpg......If I drop my speed a little I can get over 50mpg. No gearbox whine to speak of.......So I would be a little concerned about that....... Quote
Matt Williams Posted July 1, 2009 Author Posted July 1, 2009 Looking on the Audi forum seems like there can be anb issue with the pinion bearing not common but can be fixed without a gearbox rebuild if caught in time. Economy is something else looks like others have had issues but I have not found a solution, it runs and goes just fine so can't be too much. It has just had the belts done by the Audi dealers not sure if there is anything that they have missed, I understand static timing on the earlier engine requires resetting and can make quite a difference, not sure if the is true of the pd engine. JeffC Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 I may have a gearbox laid about, there is a gearbox code in the service book or on the sticker in the boot, let me know what it is and i will check Quote
