Calling FW400 Ian/Paul Bayes

Mines the same, a bit hit and miss some times till you have the knack of if.

I think it's just the way they are, Hewland sent me the original invoice for my gearbox with all the drive ratios in it, so I could see what Ive got but I haven't had it apart yet.

They also sent me all the assembly drawing as well, if you ever need them.

Im not sure if I need to drain the oil out on this geerbox first, I don't think I have to as it's a cassett for interchanging between races.

Have you had yours apart yet.

Moomin!! The earley bird catches the worm !! as they say.

Unlucky mate !!!    :bangshead:

All the best !!

Both the assembly drawing and the servicing manual are available for free download on the Hewland website; yes, you do need to drain the oil off before changing the ratios. I've not had the box in my FW apart yet, 'cos I've not felt the need to change the ratios and it's working fine (...I always apply the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' maxim), but I've dismantled Hewlands on Formula Fords and stuff - it's pretty straightforward when you get the hang of it.

Hewland advised me that you can fit a stronger bias spring to centre it on the 2nd/3rd plane (Flexo springs, part no. 123416) if required, but I haven't got round to trying this yet. Apparently its about 3-4 times stiffer than the standard spring.

Id be interested in the background history you have on the car; I'm slightly surprised you think there were only 5 built. I know of 2 in Japan and 3 in this country. of course, which would seem to account for every one, but I thought someone (yourself?) claimed that one was written off at Thruxton and the car's designer, Martin Ogilvie was fairly firm in his belief that six were built when I spoke to him.

Moomin... if you're serious, give me a shout. I'm always open to the right offer on any of my cars, and though I've no plans to sell the FW at the moment I could be persuaded... or I'll happily give you first refusal if and when I decide to move it on.

Ian,

I see from a thread on the 'Cars for Sale' board that you have recently sold your FW400?

Not being a WSCC member, I can't post on that part of the forums, but if you know the new owner, it might be helpful for him if you could put me in touch.

I own one of the other two FW400's still in this country and recently bought all remaining spares from the factory. There's not a huge amount of stuff, but you never know if I might have something that would come in handy to keep one of the other cars running.

Similar invitation to Paul Bayes - if you want to get in touch, Paul, I'd be happy to hear from you!

Sam,

I can neither PM nor email you (via PH either).  Can you drop me an email when you have a moment.

Moomin,

I can't contact you through your profile here on the Westfield forums, 'cos I'm not a full member, and I don't know your username over on PistonHeads to contact you through your profile there (there doesn't seem to be a 'Moomin' listed amongst the members).

Either e-mail me on mintsprint@btinternet.com or let me know an e-mail address I can contact you on.

Hello.

Just a quick message to keep everyone up to date on the ownership of the FW400s.

Danny who posted saying that he bought the Lamborghini Orange FW has just sold it (last week) to my friend Dominic Duroux and it now lives in London.

In the meantime it has been resprayed in white too.

Dom has a whole host of work/life pressures, so the handling of his cars is left to me.  Yes, that does mean that I have a FW400 at my disposal that has not cost me a penny.

I know that Dom wanted to make contact with whoever it was that had all the spares, so if anyone has contact details, that would be superb.

Sorry, but I doubt the car will appear at many Westfield meets, but it will be getting plenty of track time... in fact I am booking a 'Ring trip at the moment....

This said, we appreciate how rare the car is, so if anyone needs any information from it, or if there is anything we can do to contribute to the community, please just ask!

Sam 68 (Chap with the spares) doesn't seem to post on here very often but seems to hang about on Pistonheads quite a bit.

He's currently bleating on about how 500Bhp / tonne is pointless in the kit cart section.

Haha bleating :D

Roadgoing FW400's have become slightly rarer.... I have heard that unfortunately Paul Bayes's orange car had a coming together with a parked car sometime last summer and came off worst.

Apparently it's not terminal and will be back on the road soon!

I did give an e-mail address for myself in the post immediately prior to The Palmdale Kid's.

I'm in touch with Dom.
