markcoopers Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Well insurance is a bit of a personal thing, and i would check the exact cover as well. On the recieving end of this once i would say it would of been good, but a track day is potentially a dangerous place, which is why getting people in equal groups of ability and machienery is important. LOT are a great company, which reminds me my membership has expired.....I must fix that, Lifetime i think. Quote
Lurksalot Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Mark - keep going you may eventually win me over on the tyre debate A048R My tyre of choice , when warm they are as sticky as sticky things , 18psi ...................and smile Use them hard and they don't do many miles, but did I mention................. they stick like sticky things....... SteveH Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 The thing about a first trackday is that you'll have a great time wherever you go . Personally I'd say if you want to do a conventional trackday the club day at Mallory is the best bet; there will obviously be plenty of other Westies there to compare with, free instruction is available and Mallory is a great circuit for first-timers as it's not too complicated to learn. You should also find it a bit easier as it's sessioned so you should be out there with a simlar pace of car. Doing an open pit day at Bedford would mean that you could have cars closing on you with a substancial speed difference and you've got to keep an eye out for them, it isn't a problem once you get comfortable but it does add something extra for you to think of whilst you are trying to get your lines right! If you want a day of hooning around sideways then our Oulton driftdays are the thing to do, we do club discounts (of course ) and free instruction is included. I'm still surprised that we dont get queues of Se7ens for these days because they are just the perfect car to do it in - It is a distance to come for some drivers but there are plenty of good B&Bs nearby and I can fairly say that the driftdays get the best feedback for any events that we run or attend, they are more relaxed than a normal trackday, the type of driving has a bigger grin-factor and with only a small number of cars there there's always a friendly club atmosphere. Looking at some of the other questions I'd say that you should run the best tyres you can on a trackday, obviously they will help with speed but unless you are on slicks they will often be more progressive at the limit as well which makes it easier to push on a bit and a lot less scarey when they do let go . I haven't used A048s but Toyo 888s are a great trackday tyre, fast but forgiving! For the driftday, I'd go for the decent tyres on the front and a pair of boggo on the rear; you will get virually zero tyre wear over the day due to the special surface but the more grip you can get at the front compared to the rear the more fun it is! I tend to run racing wets on the front and a pair of Kumhos on the rear, they started off with 2-3mm and after 6 driftdays they are still legal I don't personally bother with separate insurance and it is very very rare that two cars come together on a trackday so most of the incidents are within the control of the driver, if you start of steady and build your pace over the day then you shouldn't really have any problems. Having said that, I snapped the outer rose joint on the osr upper wishbone at Oulton on Tuesday coming out of Old Hall which was a bit lively so I guess you never really know what can happen . housebeautician Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 sounds like these track days get addictive. thanks steve h for the info, lots of things to bear in mind but looking forward to having a go at one. Quote
SteveH Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 No worries It can get addictive, either by instructing, running events or just going to trackdays as a customer, I try to get out on track at least once a week Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted June 18, 2009 Author Posted June 18, 2009 yup thanks Steve Will be getting noise tests done soon then will be more or less reay to get sumtin booked The thought of going to Oulton makes me tingle Quote
housebeautician Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 jesus steve once a week! i wish i had the time. i think swmbo might have something to say about that. (im not really scared of her) Are you single LOL Quote
SteveH Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Nope married 16 years! She doesn't like it if I work both days on the weekend but if I'm off all weekend she says I get under her feet on the Saturday . I guess I go to 8-10 events run by other organisers each year and we are running 7 (might end up being 8) Trackaction-Online track or driftdays, obviously it would be rude not to bring a car along to those . The rest (50-60 days I guess) is working for other companies instructing on driver experience days, mostly supercar stuff and mostly in the passenger seat but we do get to do some "hotrides" where I get to drive the customers round to show them how it should be done (at least that's the theory ). Cleggy, my Duratec makes about 101-102 db and the silencer really needs repacking so you should be fine for the club day at Mallory (no noise test) and for Oulton (105 db) so long as you don't tingle too loudly . Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted June 19, 2009 Author Posted June 19, 2009 ok m8 ...thanks for that Quote
housebeautician Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 noise test booked for 26th. not holding my breath cause my mate next door who knows a bit about this stuff reckons its about 110db as it is so i will wait and see.
