Hi

Can anyone tell me where near York would be the best place to buy a cheapish helmet for use on track days.  I want a helmet that will comply for use on track days but doesn't cost a fortune.  I hope to buy two.

Thanks

i was always told   if youve got a fifty quid head stick a fifty quid helmet on it :t-up:

If it's just for trackdays then find your nearest motcycle dealer/shop and get them there... make sure they fit properly as a badly fitting helmet is worse than none at all  :t-up:

Totally agree with this!

I spent ages trying on helmets to get the right fit.

Also some motorbike shops will have old stock / last year ones that they will be happy to sell out cheaper.

as Jedi says though your head is worth more than £50 so buy well and be safe.

If money doesn't allow a half decent lid or you don't want to spend the money protecting your skull, the advise would seem to be stay off the track

Hi

I wondered how long it would take someone to say the £50 helmet for £50 head thing - very predictable :D  :p

Although I don't want to spend a fortune, I do want a helmet that would do the job and fits properly.  The key question is; does anyone know where to buy near York?

Hi Colin

I took a trip to to Hull and popped in to Hein Gericke,130 quid later my heads protected, just don't ask about me brain   :p  :p  :D  :D

Just checked their web siteclicky and there is a shop in York. They have a large range of lids to suit all budgets.

Try a few on as they all fit differently.

Good luck hunting.

Some cheap helmets are safer than expensive ones.I bought a highly rated one on the SHARP helmet safety scheme website. Here

I wanted to buy a cheap helmet for trackdays too..

I shopped around for ages and came to one conclusion... cheap helmets are uncomfortable..

I ended up with a Shoei Raid 2 (£155 from the NEC Bike Show)..

then why ask  ???    maybe it would have been more helpfull if you had stated your budget

shoei everytime, washable linning, very light ,cheek pads sizes can be changed and its so so quite, liked the arai but a little noisy and very uncomfy but you have to try to see what fits your neep :D

shoei's can be picked up for good money if your not fussy on having a year old model, mines retails at £325 and got it for £199,theres no vat on bike lids so keeps the price down :)

Fair point :)   I was hoping for something less than £150.  The advice so far has been very helpful, I've never bought a helmet befor so any guidance is good.

Richard, I will try Hein Gericke in Hull as I work in Hull so it is convenient.

Thanks

Hi

Jedi mentioned the V2, as I understand from the karting forum they are out of stock expected back in end of July they are Snell 2005 approved which is MSA approved, the only stockist though is in Dartford...Kent.

At the Autopsort show I tried on loads of helmets, V2, arai, Bell, Simpson and looked at Stilo and for the money the V2 was very good and it is Snell approved.

I am looking for one to use when I go karting ( TKM Extreme) I will buy one of these just for practice to start out with if when I start racing I expect to change probably for an Arai but until they start giving some sort of pass rate etc ( just like the SHARP Website) for the helmets just because you have paid more does it always mean that you are getting a better quality product???

I my personnel opinion I am not always convinced...

My personal opinion is that how it fits is more important than cost.

I have a 35 quid bike helmet for trackdays ina  tin top. Its certified for bouncing down the roa on my head to gold standard and 4 stars in the relevant tests and hence wil serve the purpose fine.

For racing you need approval, and while I would never set out to buy a helmet based on the cheapest possible, I certainly dont believe the most expensive will be the best
