chris7273 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Hello, I did a search before asking the question. I found some information but I would like a confirmation. A friend of mine would like to change his dampers and springs on his Westfield SEIW (year 2000, zetec 2 liters, road use). He wants AVO shocks (nearly found them) but he doesn't know what to order for the springs. Can someone tell me which springs he should order ? Front : I have found 300 lbs... Is it correct ? Rear : Range from 125 to 175 lbs... is it correct ? Are there different lengths ? Thank you Quote
thos Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Ring someone like CAT if you want AVO, and they'll be able to advise on spring rates and lengths. My SEIW has 300lb front and 180lb rear, but I cant remember the lengths off hand. Also try Procomp who do Protech shocks. Quote
chappers Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 For my 2001 zetec SEiW I went for 300lbs fronts (but I was going to get 275lbs but they were out of stock), and 175lb rear springs. I think the standard is 200lbs but from searching on here it seems 150 ish is better. My front (12ish") protech shocks have 7" long springs and the 14" rear shocks have 9" springs which gives some upward and downward adjustment of the spring seats, whereas my standard westfield supplied springs were at the bottom on the shock so ride height couldn't be lowered even if I wanted to. Kev. Quote

adam1330 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 I've just been advised to go for 250F & 225R on my Zetec Westie. Quote
CedricTheBrave Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 depends what you use it for 160/180 is ok for the road but is too soft for the track better with 225 or there abouts for track maybe even stiffer also depends if you are a planning on going 2 up all the time best thing is to experiment imo Quote
chris7273 Posted May 28, 2009 Author Posted May 28, 2009 SH_T ! I think that I will also have to get new dampers too ! I tried to set the damping for the front dampers of my Westfield from 1998 (Spax) and the screw of the left damper turns without stopping (I don't feel the "clicks" as for the right one...). Has somebody had this symptom in the past ? Quote
custardtart Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 SPAX well known as being absolute sh*te. Mine were solid after 3 clicks and even set at the softest had no rebound at all. Protech or AVO are great shocks for not too much £££. Not too sure the best place for AVO's (Northampton Motorsport/PlaysKool?)these days but Procomp do the Protechs. www.procomp.co.uk Quote

My spoken english is worse than my written english, so I would like to write first... does someone has an email from procomp ? EDIT : I just called Matt at Procomp. He was very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, they don't sell dampers, they sell AND install them ! The problem is I don't live in UK He kindly gave me the contact person at Protech for direct sale of protech shocks that should be "enough" for our use (road). Quote
CedricTheBrave Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Protech direct are fine if you tell them they are for a Westy they will valve them correctly. I have had good experience with them direct from the factory. Quote
chris7273 Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 I received a quote from Protech for two sets of dampers (for my friend and for me now... since I have a Spax damper that decided to let me down...). They propose 12.5 inches front and 14 inches rear. Does it sounds good ? For the springs, 300 front and 175 rear seems a good "compromis" for road use. What about the diameter ? what is best : 1.9 or 2.25 inches ? Thank you Quote

Spring rates you've chosen are Quote
chris7273 Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 It seems that protech shocks accept the two diameters. If there is no advantage to chhose one diameter rather than the other, I will choose the same diameter as the existing one. Quote
nikpro Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 I only have experience of the protech dampers that fit an elise and these were 1.9". Quote
