matt_c Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I see that Powder coating of chassis from Westfield is optional. Is there any sensible and more cost effective alternative to powder coating the chassis and suspension parts? Personally I can't see why I would want it anything other than powder coated. I would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this. Thanks Matt Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Powder coat rules have heard of people galvanising for ultimate protection Quote
stephenh Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 If you're talking about a new chassis from the factory, I'm fairly sure that they all come powder coated in black as standard now. That said, I believe the race chassis may be a grey colour to give instant recognition. If however you're talking about restoring an old chassis, then if you can accept the cost then I should think powder coating would be the way to go. However it isn't really a diy option, if you're restoring an old chassis on a tight budget then a painted finish would be cheapest. Not sure what paint, there have been posts about the best chassis paint to use for touching up, so a search may reveal! Quote
matt_c Posted May 20, 2009 Author Posted May 20, 2009 I have been told by the factory that it's bare metal unless I take the option of powder coating. Don't get me wrong I think powder coating has to be the only way to go. I suppose they must offer it as an option in an effort to keep the initial selling price of the kit as low as possible. Quote
stephenh Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 That is a new one on me. Definately opt for powder coating from new if the budget can possibly stand it. If you paint it it will forever need touching up. Quote

Paul Ash Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Have it powder coated by the factory, otherwise by the time you get it home or get it to a powder coaters it will have started to rust. If that happens you'll need to have it sand blasted on top of powder coated !! Quote
Jackv4 Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 ive only ever had the one westy and it had the chassis powder coated from the factory,it was 9yrs old and ive got to say that the chassis still looked like day one(mint),very good finish and dont beleave for a second that you will ever find paint that will last as well, i cant mind how much it costs for power coated chasssis but i wouldnt opt for anything else, galvanized would be good imho johny Quote
perksy Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Beleive its an option so as to give you the chance of getting it coated elsewhere in a different colour if you want or even paint it As has been said, If its a New build Get it Powder coated by the Factory Quote
Bananaman Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Some people like to modify the chassis to suit there application, adding tabs for wiring, extra bracing, widening tunnel to get engine back etc.... Then get it powder coated.. P.S. I never heard/saw a grey chassis race or other wise Quote
