Crash test dummy Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 I'm looking for one but preferably two cam caps for an XE head. No. 9 would be ideal but I'm not fussy. TIA
jim_l Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Try these...found them to be a gem. I asked them what they do and they said, engine bits, engine bits, and more engine bits, no sticky out bits! http://www.kingcomponents.co.uk/who.html I'd be interested to find out how you get on asking for a rarely needed component like this.
stu999 Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Sadly, you can't just get a cam cap off another head and use it on another (or at least, the chances of getting away with it are very, very slim) as the caps are 'line bored' in situ, making them specific to the head...
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 And the reason it's marked with a number is that you couldn't even move it's position on the same cylinder head let alone a different one - unless as Stu said, you were incredibly lucky. (In fact if you get away with, rush out and buy every lottery ticket you can get your hands on while you're on a roll ) On a more helpful note; while I believe there are companies that can re-machine the cam caps/head, most people find it more cost effective to just pick up another one.
Crash test dummy Posted May 10, 2009 Author Posted May 10, 2009 Thanks for the input but I'm up with the whys and wherefores of the caps being head specific and why they are numbered etc. However what you can do if you are lucky and it is only one or so that need replacing is to fit the odd cap last. If the cam still spins freely (with no valves in) you're away. If it doesn't, blue up the inside of the cap refit and and spend a little time with fine wet and dry where any witness marks are revealed. It's how they used to size bearings in old days. Not ideal but it will save scrapping an otherwise good head.
