Sierra Diff 3.92 or 4.10

I'm after changing my current 3.62 diff for a 3.92 or 4.10.

I believe it's a 7" as it's 7 inches across the top mounting points as seen below, but am prepared to be corrected.

My current diff has the viscous LSD and would like another with this fitted if possible.

As ever, hoping not to spend a fortune and to be honest I'm not sure what these cost, but interested in whatever people have rather than having the current one re-built.

Cheers

7" 4.1 is after-market only, so pretty rare, Kam Diffs make them but they're pricey. 4.44 and 4.7 along the same lines, rarer the lower you go. Second hand? Good luck.

You can get a 4.07:1 in a 7.5" from a Scorpio 2.0 8v, and a 4.27 in the 16v. Straightforward swap from 7" to 7.5", but weigh in a good bit heavier.

Thanks for the tips Thos. I did find a 7½" 4.1 but I can't get it in my car - it's an earlier chassis and there are no spacers around the 7" diff to remove to make space (see pic at the top). To get a 7½ in there I'd have to modify the chassis which I'm not inclined to do (unless there's another cunning method that I'm not aware of - grind lumps off the 7½" diff?).

3.9 could be the only option. Otherwise it's the £5-600!

If there are no spacers to remove, cut a bit off the diff casing

What about drive shafts?

John. I did wonder if it was possible to trim a quarter of an inch off each diff mounting flange on a 7½ inch diff to fit it into the 7 inch space.  However as Banaman mentions I don't know if my driveshafts will still fit. I'm also a bit nervous about hacking lumps of an expensive item - and reducing the mounting strength in the process. That said, I'm only running a x-flow at the moment so it's not exactly stressed!

I also understand that a 7½" diff is very heavy in comparison to a 7"?

Driveshafts are the same for 7.5 vs 7 inch. But the 1/2inch mounting different is all on one side, so if you take a 1/4 of each side, you'll have offset the diff by 1/4" and will need different driveshafts.

Standard 7.5inch has threaded mounts, as opposed to 7" straight through bar. Cant think off the top of my head if there is enough meat to take off 1/2" .. I doubt it, but someone with one lying around might be able to tell you.

7.5 inch is heavier ....try a search?

Thanks Tom - I can see all this ending in a big bill to rebuild the one I've got with the ratio I want!

The question then changes - is £500 on a diff a better performance investment than £500 on the engine? I think it may be as I won't get much more grunt for £500 out of the x-flow.
