Dave_morton Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Having a few problems with my VDO speedo, so thought, since you can get a GPS sat-nav for around £50, someone must have made a GPS speedo for not-silly money. Did the usual google, and it appears I am wrong.....Why??? Quote
Lurksalot Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 At a stab...... the £50 covers mostly hardware ,so someone would have to redesign the shape and screen and s**t to give half the info that the sat nav does Quote
Norman Verona Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Nothing to do with sat-nav but I had a SPA digital speedo. The first one was replaced under warranty. The second one was supplied at exchange price (£60, the full price is £161). When this one stopped working, after the accident SPA advised to replace the hal pickup as it may have been damaged in the accident. I doubted this as it didnt not get directly knocked but paid my £36 for a new one. Speedo still didn't work. Went to the local cycle shop and bought a bike speedo for 11€ So my advice is to fit a bike speedo. Only problem is no illumination at night. Quote
RichP Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 The ETB Digidash has a GPS speed add-on that's supposed to be very accurate. Quote
Rory's Dad Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 The ETB Digidash has a GPS speed add-on that's supposed to be very accurate. Surely the whole point about GPS is that it is absolutely accurate otherwise the M1 would end somewhere else Rory's Dad Quote
combatsapph Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Surely the whole point about GPS is that it is absolutely accurate otherwise the M1 would end somewhere else I don't think he means accuracy I think he means how often it updates i.e. ampling rate. @ 60mph it may be only sampling every 50m or so - the points between samples are interpolated/extrapolated. Would also mean your speedo only updates every 50m as well. You could be +/- 5mph over that distance. You can get GPS that has very high sampling rates but they tend to be quite expensive. Also, phones generally have a much lower sampling rate that stand alone GPS. As far as GPS on a car goes - lets hope there are no speed cameras in a tunnel eh? Your speedo would also be likely to not work at an MOT, hence a fail. You could get a garagre that gets arsey and wont do a road test. Quote
Hammy Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 don't you need to have a mileometer too tho ? Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 When I first installed my RT Dash 2 I used the GPS speed display before I got the wheel speed sensor sorted out. It's really distracting when you suddenly loose the speedo briefly when driving through heavily wooded areas, through tunnels, and on one occasion going through the heavily built up, (tall buildings) part of Manchester city centre. pistonbroke Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Afaik a speedo is not a requirement for MOT neither is required by law Quote
