speedy jon Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 clarkson coment on brown i dont agree with the one eye bit but the rest is spot on Quote
Mark Stanton Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Apparently Clarkson has apologised for his personal appearance remarks so that just makes Brown a scottish idiot Quote
Mobsy Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Funny how Scottish MPs complained about the Scottish bit and the RNIB complained about the one-eyed but no one complained about Clarkson calling him an idiot. Also 'one-eyed' and 'Scottish' are both factual. Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I cant see what the problem with any of it is. Quote
Martin Keene Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 One Eyed... Check Scottish... Check Idiot... Check Holy s**t is telling the truth not allowed in this country anymore! Quote
nlash Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Do you not think the world (re press) has gone a little bit mad? Expressing an opinion is a dangerous thing these days isn't it? Americanism gone mad! A Gollywog for example, was a product branding motif for the Manchester company, Robertsons Jam, without a murmur of a complaint for getting on 20 years. Then, one person, leading to a few others, suddenly decide its all in bad taste. Crazy, honestly, its very very sad but If I were the current owners of Croft Circuit, i'd be tempted to cut my losses and get out now before things get any worse. How much is property in France these days? Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Didn't he forget the slack-jawed bit? Quote
samcooke Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 QUOTE A Gollywog for example, was a product branding motif for the Manchester company, Robertsons Jam, without a murmur of a complaint for getting on 20 years. Then, one person, leading to a few others, suddenly decide its all in bad taste. Yep - but then people got hold of the 'wog' bit and started using it as an insult and the meaning changed. Not really too dissimilar to nigger and I don't suppose any of us would defend the use of that term. Besides, even if you don't find what she says offensive, Carol Thatcher is offensive by her lineage and if I were the nice man at the BBC I'd be looking for any excuse to have her shot fire her. bjnsharp Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Clarkson comment is fine in my opinion and when I heard it, actually quite funny. I can't stand these people who come out complaining about the smallest of insulting jokes. the news were playing the other "insulting" jokes from top gear. The prostitute one just seemed even funnier than before. My understanding on the word nigger, which I thought was the offensive word. The meaning used to be a "dirty man" or something along those lines. Then it got picked up and used as an insult to black people. a bit like gay meaning happy and then a word for a homosexual. I am sure there are plenty more words which have changed over time. I think whether or not carol thatcher mean't it maliciously or not, she is just plain stupid, it's like prince harry, he must just be an idiot. People in those positions know they are going to be offensive to some people, so don't say them. It's not hard. Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I watch John Barns being interviewed on the TV the other day and he was asked what he thought of the comment by Carol Thatcher. He said it is the intent that is important and he did not believe that she had said it with any malice at alll and he could not see a problem. Interesting comments from a black man. Now if something is faculty correct and not said with malice then how can it be offensive. Calling someone a Niger if they come from Niger is not offensive and yes there is a place called Niger see here but if not coming from Niger and someone is just black it could be a problem. As for the Clarkson comment if G. Brown is bothered about what Clarkson has said he is in the wrong job. We are getting too PC and you are afraid to open your mouth these days without offending someone. P.s. If I have anybody with the content of my posts I am very very very very sorry Quote
tmo Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 one eyed, gurning, scottish idiot would be more apt. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I suspect, although I admit not actually having checked, that 'nigger' derives from 'negro' - if you try saying it in a deep-south accent it becomes "niggra" and you will see how it can mutate into 'nigger'. 'Negro' is a perectly workmanlike word for an African native and is as normal as caucasian and occidental but, because of its association with racist insults via 'nigger', it has fallen from favour. Shame really, because now we have to say 'Afro-Caribbean' instead. Quote
samcooke Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 QUOTE Calling someone a Niger if they come from Niger is not offensive and yes there is a place called Niger Erm... Niger has one g in it (which is pronounced like a j) and people from there are Nigeriens (as opposed to Nigerians, who are from Nigeria). Quote
