KerryS Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 From another thread you will know that we are loft clearing and in general nothing of great interest has turned up. But I have found my old b/w photo processing stuff most of which was thrown out, the developer was seriously brown but as well as that developing tanks and trays went plus other sundries. What I did find though were some old photographs, for instance Jim Clark's Lotus 33 at Oulton Park in 1966 plus some cars practising at Silverstone for a mid-70's GP. I also found lots of negatives and I have tried scanning them backed by white paper then inverting the image. What you get without any other processing is a positive image but a bit lacking in contrast. This is one that my Dad took at Birmingham Town Hall in 1961 when a hi-fi dealer friend was demonstrating the abilities of stereo over mono. There were two banks of Quad Electostatics each fed by what I think is a Radford valve amp. I seem to recall that this was repeated the year after with Quad 11 amps and my Dad's photo appeared on the front cover of HiFI News. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 That's an impressive picture, Kerry, and the 'value' of the speakers must vie with the cost of the organ - or did I get 'value' and 'cost' the wrong way around? Are those speakers still available, I wonder, and were they really as good as they say? Quote
blankczechbook Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 the slide and neg scanner i have uses a back light and turns off the regular flatbed scanner light while you have the neg adapter plugged in... - i can't say that i am too impressed by the quality of the scans, or maybe the cameras weren't up to much either on those old negs and slides that i have tried. ...but this scan doesn't seem too bad - considering it is a completely DIY attempt !! Quote
KerryS Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 I googled for negative scanning which came up with the wheeze for just using the flatbed. It did say that a lightbox could be constructed to take the scanner illumination through some mirrors and reflect it back on itself, but for a quick "look see" of the picture just back it with a white sheet of paper. The Quad Electostatic speakers in the photo were made for several years and then they did another version for some more years but not sure if they still offer one or not. They were big and needed lots of free airspace behind to work to their best effect. For clasical music they were lovely but then I started playing errr...more modern stuff and the excursions of the bass panel were bigger and they arced across...= angry Dad spending lots of ££ to put right, they had to go back to Quad at Huntingdon. Hammy Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Quad still about and selling electrostatic speakers. You've been in that loft for about 3 or 4 weeks now Kerry , Either its very large or you've slowed down a bit since giving up work. Quote
pistonbroke Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I seem to remember those same or similar speakers being demo'd in St Helens Town Hall about the same year. Very impressive. Very expensive Would be very interested to see the Clark photo's perhaps you could post them up here or even email to me. Thanks Quote

Mark Stanton Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I recognise that Town Hall seen a few gigs there (Paul Carrack in November was latest one ) Hall is now fully re-furbished and looking good Quote
KerryS Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 IWould be very interested to see the Clark photo's perhaps you could post them up here or even email to me. Here you go: I am fairly sure that this is the 2 litre V8 Climax that Clark was using before the BRM H16 was available. In fact I think there was a H16 engine in the back of a transporter on the day with a large hole in the block. Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I was named after Jim Clark, my brother is Stewart after Jackie ... Quote
KerryS Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 And this is a Tyrell maybe? Not sure. Think it was 1976 Quote
gee_fin Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Spent some time scanning my Gran's old postcards, some stunning photography from the 1910s-1950s. Started a blog on it :- http://www.mygrandparentsoldpostcards.co.uk/ Really love seeing the old shots Quote

KerryS Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 That'll be right then. The DNS "Lotus-BRM 43 Blown engine" agrees with my memory Quote
