Bones Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Looking to buy a focus as the new family run about. From what I've seen there's so many variants i cant work out what's what. If I'm correct the 1.6,1.8 & 2.0 petrol engines come in the "Zetec","Titanium" & "Ghia". The 1.4,1.6 & 1.8 engines are in the "Sport" & "LX". At the risk of sounding thick , I always thought the Zetec was a type of engine which is superior to the standard type? or does Zetec just refer to the spec level Quote
combatsapph Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I could be wrong but:- 1.6 engine is a Zetec-SE - not a zetec at all really but a Sigma 1.8 and 2.0 engines are Zetecs The above is regardless of trim level. Just to confuse matters Zetec is also a trim level but doesn't dictate the actual engine in it - if it's a 1.6 it's a Sigma engine - if it's a 1.8 or 2.0 it's a Zetec. Sigma aren't any worse than a Zetec - just smaller. Unless you're talking about later Foci (I forget the cut off - 2004?) then you'll have Sigma, Zetec and Duratec-HE engines (1.6, 1.8, 2.0 respectively). All cleared up now? Quote
Bones Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 All cleared up now? <!--emo& Think so So an "06" 1.8L, is Zetec engined regardless of the fact that it may badged as: Titanium Ghia Sport Lx Oh & Zetec Quote
Mark B Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 "Zetec" is a type of engine introduced in 93 & used in the mondeo, focus etc but then they also introduced it as a trim level too & doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the type of engine fitted to the car.... For instance you can have a focus "Zetec" tdci which is a diesel engine with zetec trim spec..... The trim levels go basically- LX Sport (based on LX) Zetec Ghia Ghia X Titanium Titanium X You also can spec up different models so that a lower model can have virtually the same kit as the next model up, just depends on what the original purchaser specced at the time..... HTH Oh and all the current focus/mondeos have duratech engines, not zetec engines, ford don't use the zetec anymore & sold all old stocks of them -hence why you can buy a brand new crated 2litre blacktop zetec for £700 from various sources. The plot thickens ! So by current model's do you mean 08/09 ? was there a cut off point when Zetec's (engines) were replaced by Duratec's. Looking at an "06" 1.8 Focus(Zetec trim level) & just trying to find out what engine is in it. Cheers. Quote
speedy jon Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 an 06 plate focus with a 1.8 would be a duratec not a zetec or a 1.8 lynx diesel. Quote

Can't remember the exact date matey but it was roughly 2004 iirc.....The diesel engines also changed roughly same time to "duratorque" from the endura range etc. An 06 focus "zetec" 1.8 would be duratech (all alloy block & says duratech on engine cover) or duratorque if it's a diseasel.... If you have the reg you can find out the engine by doing an insurance quote for it or looking it up on dvlas website, it'll also tell you the emissions data and road tax duty. HTH Mark B Quote
jsawyer86 Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 not that this will help but i had a Y reg mondeo 2l zetec, with a duratec engine ( cos that makes sense ) personaly i think the older zetec (engine) is slightly better. but saying that, the duratec hasnt got a snappy cambelt to worry about. ideal for a family tin top. oh and LX = base model , Giha = top model. Zetec is usualy the one in the middle. Quote
Bones Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 Cheers all Ended up getting a 1.6 Ghia , ready to pick up next week. Not quite a Westy but seems ok for a tin top Quote
