Lloyd Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 I have got a 1700 ford crossflow, with twin webers and luv it!, My mechanical knowledge is limited. Recently oil seems to be `spitting`out of an aluminium tank which is fixed to the bulk head. The tank has 2 large hoses to it, one from the top of the rocker cover and one from lower down the engine. The oil seems to be coming from what appears to be 3 breather holes in the tank towards the top of the tank. I dont know what function this tank performs however someone has suggested some kind of overflow due to pressures. Do I need to post a photo? Can anyone help please with any advise. Thanks in advance. Lloyd Quote
Rob Navin Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Hi Loyd It sounds like you catch tank needs emptying. Take the takn of the bulkhead and make sure its fully drained. The X-flow is not the most seales of engines when it comes to oil and it leaking a bit or breathing in this way is not normally anything to worry about as long as you keep checking the level. Quote
James Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 It's a breather tank empty it out check your oil level and don't worry about it most of the time the fluid build up is water from condensation but the cross flow is world famous for being a self leveling engine! But seriously just empty regular basis and it will be fine Quote
Mark Stanton Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 and don't be tempted to pour the oil from catch tank back into the engine Always use new fresh oil to top your engine up Quote
Lloyd Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 thanks very much for the advice. Lloyd Quote
blitz Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 It is just a case of arranging the engine breathing pipes correctly, though it will involve an extra connection into the rocker cover. (The cover where you add oil to the engine.) Look at the engine block towards the rear under the Carb/s. There will be a rubber tube going from there to the Ali. tank. this needs to be connected to a new connection at the rear of the rocker cover. You then need another rubber tube from the oilfiller cap to the ali tank where the first hose was removed from. This will need a new oil filler cap from Halfords, that has a connection for the pipe. (Ask for a cap from a 1974 Escort OHV.) The extra connection is an easy fit for a small engineering shop if you don't know anyone that can do it. Where are you? there is almost certainly someone nearby to advise. Quote
jak Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 x flow - oil leak. sounds about right!! That'll be me taxi then! Quote
Lloyd Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 Emptied the tank today (Allen key sump plug underneath). been out in it and it seems fine, Thanks very much for the help!. Lloyd Quote
