How dare you place us Liverpudlians in with a bunch of tarmac laying, alcholic, ginger haired ethnic minorities.

British press at it's best. I was reading the Clarkson coluum on Saturday and he said basically that we know everything about what is happening in Gazza, how many are killed with teams of film crews showing the aftermath of air strikes. And yet our boys are fighting the taliban and all we know is another solider has been killed on patrol.

It should come as no shock that people use terms that can be twisted by those with an agenda, especially if you are famous. There are far more important things to report in the news than this.

The difference is chips.  :D

All those you mentioned haven't got any.  ;)

But far too many people are coming into this country nowadays with big chips on their shoulders

Send them my way, I like chips.  :)

I had this argument a few years ago on the darkside. It's the meaning behind the name that makes it racist.

And, from my experience, the people I know from so called ethnic groups (isn't that all of us?) don't mind being called "lazy nigger", "****" or "jew" if they know that the person using these names isn't a racist biggot.

My Grandparents on my Mums side were Irish immigrants, I never met them, they died before I was born, but you can bet your life my grandad was known as Paddy, and I would like to think he didnt go off on one every time he was called it.

What gets me is the fact that, given the story the media have created about how objectionable the phrase is, the BBC and newspapers continually repeat it..If it's not right don't say it . .

However I feel that we have to teach people to be more robust and shrug off some of these supposed "insults".

What passes between friends is up to them to sort out not for others to take umbrage for them..

MY father isn't invited to go to football matches with my brother any more because the language he uses as terms of endearment is banned now. it's all about context..

I was at a Finbar Furey gig a year or so ago and a woman in the audience was bantering with him and ,as she had an obvious Irish accent, he shot a remark back at her in which he called her 'Biddy'. I get the feeling that Biddy is the feminine version of Paddy - it's a universal Irish name, not any form of insult.

Aha

Biddy is the shortened version of Bide (y) In  which is a Scots/Gaelic term for "the woman who bides (lives) with you , So a biddy is a generic term for a woman of a certain age.

I'm full of uninteresting nonsense  -  if I could just get the sodding car to start I would be happy
