Northampton Motorsport Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 pesronally I would buy the best you can afford, as long as your kit collection does'nt outgrow the box it will last you years and years. Have a look at www.stainlesstools.co.uk these are nice boxes, they are all high grade steel with roller bearing drawers and strong casters. we know the guy that imports them and have sold a few from our shop (both of our apprentices have bought these boxes as well). we can usually sell them for around 10% less than his web price. if you see something you like let me know the part number and i will try and get a better price. They are a lot dearer than the argos / sealy option but to give you an idea i could have bought the same size toolbox as my snap on box ( retail £2K) for £580. before you ask i had already bought the snap on box 18 months earlier. regards Troy Quote
windy Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Most of the technicians where I work have bought the Costco stainless steel ones with the 6 casters. So far they are matching the durability of the Snap-on ones - some people even sold their snap-on chests to replace with the costco ones so that must say something about how good they are. But when you can replace your snapon chest with money in your pocket for a bigger Costco one its a bit of a no-brainer really. I think they were about £400 a couple of years ago - not sure how much now + they have got bigger. When you wheel a box about the workshop regularly most cheap toolboxes usually start to crack around the corners. Some people have got the smaller Facom type chests and these have all cracked. Machine Mart Coventry has a no VAT sale tomorrow Sun for regular customers (invitation only) and the clarke HD ones are pretty good value if its just for hobby use at home - I have had one for 5 years & it has been good. Mid life crisis Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I bought my Teng tools top box complete with a full set of tool for 162 quid off flebay. There are a couple for sale there now, not sure where they stand in relation to quality. Ideal for my home garage though. Quote

brianm Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 has anyone had any experience with cheaper tool chests? is it worth spending more or are the cheaper adequate ? ARGOS CLICKY Wacomuk, that looks very similar to the one that JTF were offering before crimble, same colour and the top bit goes in the bottom bit. I bought the ex demo one they had in the local place, they'd lost the keys to the top draw. Paid £59 which they said was the cost price. This was a pressy for son in law to collect his household tools and stuff in. In no way does it resemble a professional tool cabinet. 1/2 the guage of proper units, and could never stand such usage, but looks the parts for that sort of price, ie under £100 If it was for me I'd buy better 2nd hand Quote
gixermark Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 all depends on whether you plan to take the top chest/box with you to the track.... i always found lots of top boxes too heavy for moving/lifting into car/van/trailer on your own.... about 2 weeks ago though i found a draper bottom cabinet and top box at a local dealer.. its the decent stuff with proper roller doors.. although the actual metal must be lighter guage than some as its light enough even loaded to lug around (just) now that i have it i wonder how i managed with a 'normal' box and socket set :-) Quote
Darrell O'Neill Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Vote for Clarke Pro HD here. Not huge money, but great bit of kit when you don't need to spend Snap-On prices. Quote
