lippydave Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 and well deserved I reckon, well done to him <!--emo& Absolutely, and as an aside I have to admit that for the first time ever, that I (as a v.proud and patriotic Englishman!), was rooting for a Jock to beat allcomers in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Lewis Hamiton MBE seems a bit premature to me though....? Hopefully a little maturity will see him lose some of that preening spoilt-brat arrogance and achieve some of Hoy's genuine humility and presence that true confidence in your own ability engenders.... fx:Deftly opens can of worms... IMHO Hamilton still believes a little too much of his/Mclaren's PR machine bullsh*t... Quote
cast iron Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 removes pin and chucks it in... ... Some bloke rides a bike and wins the olympics, which isnt exactly the world and gets knighted, Lewis wins the world championship and only gets an MBE. It's not right in my book.... ...stands back and waits for the bang Quote
lippydave Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 removes pin and chucks it in...... Some bloke rides a bike and wins the olympics, which isnt exactly the world and gets knighted, Lewis wins the world championship and only gets an MBE. It's not right in my book.... ...stands back and waits for the bang Yeah but..... Surely there is a much better chance of talent shining through in a sport where qualification via national competition is open to all willing to take part. As opposed to a sport wherby privileges are granted on a somewhat arbitrary basis, dependent upon factors such as your connections, the amount of sponsorship you can bring with you to a team etc, etc... I know Hamilton mostly got where he is on merit, and he simply can't do more than win the world championship, which is the sport's highest accolade, but I just have an irrational slight dislike of him for some reason I can't put my finger on, based on his (portrayed) personality...... I know and appreciate at least he is a proper racer willing to have a go, and realise he is the best thing to hit F1 for years, but somehow, I can't bring myself to really admireand like him in the way that I could Damon Hill or Mansell....I think it's down to his portrayal of aloof smugness..... (Which may be just a youthful veneer protecting himself?) Accept that he is a very talented racer and glad he won the F1 title, but surely double World Champions like James Toseland (WSBK) are far more deserving of an MBE? My personal summary would be, great racer, needs to add some depth to his achievments before he achieves greatness.....Think we are far too ready to bestow him as a motoring deity due to our relative (recent) British driver's lack of success.....? davidgh Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 IMHO, pretty well judged -- though perhaps a little hard on Hamilton that he did his thing in an olympic year. CH: first time in living memory that a Brit has won three golds at a single Olympics Yes, there are more possibilities in some sports than others, but nevertheless.......significant achievement for national prestige, and not his first Olympic golds: arise Sir Christopher; well deserved. LH: yes, he's a bit precocious. But, youngest ever world champion (and the first Brit for ten or eleven years (CBA to look it up)) deserves something. MBE is the most junior grade of BE currently given (sailors, swimmers and other bikers got more) -- he has plenty of time to work up the ladder if he lives up to his promise. MBE perfect. Oh, and (for those of you old enough to remember) doesn't LH remind you of the young MS? He certainly does me. Quote
