News item today BBC news proposing GPS based speed control.

Can't see it happening, think of all themoney that would be lost from speed cameras :bangshead:

At least there's an over-ride button.....

Seem to remember this being proposed a while ago on the grounds of safety. Seems that that met with some opposition so now they are trying the environmental approach.

Either way I think it will be a bad idea. The throttle has got me out of nearly as many tricky situations as the brake. Also imaging the tailgating on the motorways, just look at the HGVs.

yea i saw that - what came to mind straight awy was the inaccuracy of the gps based systems now - thats what it is based on - what happens when the speed limit is changed? the data on the unit may be out of date - your in the middle of say overtaking etc... cant see it working - of course people will think yea great - loads will want it - but only if insurance companies back it and give discounts will it be used - it will probably be hackable - so people will say - yea i have one fitted knowing full well its been tampered with - naaaa too many problem areas.. or on the flip side - if its made untamperable... not over ridable - it will be a back door to gently easing it in as compulsary kit... really screw up high performance cars!

If you live within the M25 (luckily I don't) to actually DO the posted speed would be a luxury! :bangshead:

Looks like vietnam could become very popular in the not too distant future  :p

Not much use on variable speed limit roads, temporary restrictions, or where driving at the applicable speed would be downright dangerous :bangshead:

Stupid idea pampering to green lentil munchers ;)

Anyway, I usually have one sat in the "other" drivers seat next to me ;)  ;)

Lorries already have speed limiters.

I agree that it is just one more step towards turning everyone into sheep. :sheep:

As pointed out on the radio this morning, it will not make people better drivers, just allow them to become even more bored, causing even more accidents, causing even more stupid regulations ..........

you're not the only one m8. My personal speed limiter begins at about 25mph by straightening her legs in a tense manner. If this warning is ignored, the left arm takes hold of the door passenger handle (also known as the "virtual brake"). Finally, if I've exceeded "reasonable" ( :bangshead: ) speed, an ear piercing sonic alarm will go off, that cannot then be turned off until the first half bottle of Shiraz has been reached.

It will happen, I know someone who is working on one such system at the moment. Get used to it. And they won't just limit speed, but also slow the car down as well.
