Aha, je comprend, sort of!

The bit about having the heating on low while you were out lead me to think you would run the c/h all day and the new controller just adjusted required temp at on a timer.

Still not sure having the heating on low while you're out will save much by not having to warm a cold house in the evening.

By hot water I meant the temp of the water in you rads - c/h as in central heating.
