dhutch Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Ive got a narrowbody with a CVH in it and have been wondering about the layout of the loop. Dont get me wrong, it works, as bought from the previous owner. - However the temp sensor for the fan apprently is 'very keen and comes all the time when you dont want it' but also is a little slow come unspecting traffic lights. - So he had just unpluged one of the wire off the sensor, and uses the manal switch on the dash. As do i usually. However today on the way back from campus (minutes at most, but all roundabouts lights and 30mphs) i didnt think to even look at the gauge (its ruddy cold here) and hence it promptly discharged half its cooling fluid on the trailer when i turned it off. Opps and A***! - Just spent the last two hours geting it to bleed through, in the dark, to my neighbours digust i think. Sod them. Then i ran out of petrol. Anyway, got me thinking two flow. - Firstly, its an utter dangler to blead, and secondly it would be really nice if the temp sensor could be used. From a bleeding view the car does atleast have the res cap as the highest point in the system, so it should all be fairly plain sailing. Compaired to the 306 where you have to do the whole 'hand over cap, blow down the run off pipe' game. - However the seams to be no bleed point in the radiator, and the bottom hose seams to collect air like theres no tomorrow. This is what it looks like at the moment. - Fan temp is at the bottom of what i can only descibe as the termostat housing. Which is a little odd to me. but apprently right. Daniel Quote
dhutch Posted December 6, 2008 Author Posted December 6, 2008 The larger hose to the res runs down the rhs of the engine, then is the nearest of the three going over the front upper chassis diagonal (with brake pipe going over) and down to mean the lower hose in about the middle of its lenght. That then joins onto another lenght, which runs up and then down onto the pump. Theres also another 1/2" hose that leaves the thermostat housing (just visable in second pic by corner of inlay) and rejoins near the waterpump. (wraped in tinfoil, i presume due to its proximit to the glowing exhast) - Presumably just after the the pump, to aid its bleeding, and circulate water to the stat housing and rad while the stats closed. I also presume someone intended air to able able to make it from the low hose up to the res? Maybe. It certianly cant seam to. Whole lot might bleed better with the back of the car lifted up two feet. But who knows. Daniel Quote
Jenko Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I'm not really sure there is a question here...But, the fan switch is usually located in the thermostat housing, so you really need to check it's working. Sounds like it's sticking. Also, check thermostat function... The CVH cooling should be basic and work, mine fills perfectly after I drain it from the bottom rad hose. Quote
dhutch Posted December 6, 2008 Author Posted December 6, 2008 Urrm, yeah. - The question was maybe hiding a little. Basicaly. I found my system didnt fill easly from the top, and i had a fair bit of trouble bleeding it. And i still recon theres some air in bits of it. So i was wondering if it was simular and what could done to improve it. - Maybe moving the lower hose and the hose upto the res a bit its rising all the way or large dia. And also to ask if the thermostat usally works satifactorly or not. - And if so, i guess, what usally wrong when they dont. I guess i could buy a new one if nothng else for about £10. Daniel Quote
DavidR Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 Your layout looks similar to mine and mine is bu**er to bleed the air out of. It always seems to keep air in the cylinder head unless I pump the hoses by hand to force it round. I can't count the number of times mine has dumped hot water on my feet at traffic lights or just after stopping from a blat. Mine has a rad cap on the thermostat housing and I have to be sure there is no air trapped there too. Care in filling and pumping the hoses worked for me. Raising the back of the car is a good thought. Quote
dhutch Posted December 7, 2008 Author Posted December 7, 2008 Glad atleast its not just my inablity to pour water then! - Theres a bleed on the top hose on mine (just a the stat of the solid section) but the issue i seam to have is with the bottom hose around the area before the pump. Would be soe much nicer if you could run the pump without the engine too. Jenko, do you have any photos of your cooling loop. Its only got to be subtle difrences that make it all. Certainly what we found at JCB. Routing is essential for a fast air-less fill. I need some more anti freeze in it too now i feel. Cant be very strong in there any more. Daniel Quote
