DM502
Hi all. Had enough of the xflow so the zetec id promised when i bought her is being readied for installation. The problem ive come up against is the incorrect direction of operation of the water pump. I have a 1800 mondeo zetec and looking at info on the web it looks the same as the 2000cc version and to correct the direction is to swap it for an escort unit. On this site....... http://www.emeng.gentlyhosting.co.uk/Cooling/Part2.htm it says "Running the pump in reverse will reduce the efficiency of the pump. Operationally this seems to make little difference" . As over cooling of the zetec is also an issue is it worth swapping the pump over?? Thanks for any help. blankczechbook
having looked into this also i reckon just keep the pump for now - as long as it spins it'll pump... if high temps become an issue then look into the correctly rotating pump to maximize the flow. - not a big job to change if needed later on.. there are other problems to overcome on the install which are more deserving of your time and efforts :-)
westy666
There's been many a debate about whether its necessary over the years ... quick search will reveal all the differences of opinion Personally I replaced mine as part of a cambelt change before the installation as I had little info on the service life of the engine, so it seemed like the ideal oppo. If you're doing the belt (which you should really consider unless you know life story of the engine) i'd do the pump at the same time - 15 quid from a reputable motor factors. As Blank says though ... there's plenty of other things on the way that will keep you on your toes Damian

westy666
Got to watch the budget though and time as my wifes expecting twins any time after christmas ... close the garage door and lock it away mate ... you wont get more than 30 straight mins on it for atleast another two years once theyve turned up! I just about managed to keep working on the westy with one bundle of joy ... when the second arrived I was, shall we say, 'strongly encouraged' to move the westy down the pecking order All the best with both projects though
stantman
As Westy666 said if you are changing the cam belt may as well change the pump. Just done it on my Zetec conversion and it takes 20 min more than just changing the cam belt. Not knowing th ehistory of the engine the cam belt change I viewed as essential. Good luck with the new arrivals, will take over your life, but if the car is up and running before they arrive, those short blasts when SWMBO will allow are a great stress reliever. Mark B
Do you have an 1800 or 2000cc engine? If you have an 1800 then you don't need to change the pump, if you have a 2000cc then you need an 1800 water pump. As the other guys have said, it's worth doing as they're only 15 -20 quid from a motor factors.... Cheers Mark
