wacomuk Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Been looking at a CLK sport at a local car dealers today, its got nearly 60k on the clock, FSH and looks in good general condition apart from the wheel arches. All 4 arches are rusty. looks like surface rust from stone chip damage. is this common on these mercs? Quote
Guest Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 on a modern car rust means something bad i'm afraid , even on stone chiped paint .... even fiats don't rust these days Quote
wacomuk Posted November 23, 2008 Author Posted November 23, 2008 i have just been on the merc owners club and did a search on rust, seems there is a bit of a problem with rust and thin paint Quote
JeffC Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 yep its a Merc and will rot like an old turnip , first one I ever bought was 2 1/2 years old at the time and door bottoms and rear arches had signs of rust, took it to Merc and they tried to tell me it was caused by an " unattented stonechip" rant mode on] Ive owned a few Mercs for resale in the past (will not have then now ) and everyone of them has bit me in the A*** with mechanical issues, they are built poorly/painted poorly , utter s***e (imho of course ) rant over] Quote

originalgeezer Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 walk away - better cars out there! Quote
samcooke Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 QUOTE walk away - better cars out there! If you want a CLK, there's not really. They all do it. It's just that some have been repaired. A friend's C32 AMG on a 51 has had all 4 door skins replaced. They're about to do a reapir on the boot too and they're still doing it under warranty. My 82 merc has no rust Quote

RobK Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 i have just been on the merc owners club and did a search on rust, seems there is a bit of a problem with rust and thin paint Rust is on cars from specific years and models. I have a E270 CDI thats just outside the problem period and it has no rust. I was amazed to find out Mercs have rust problems I must admit i like mine (changed from Passats), nicer on the road than most VW or Audi cars. Think the paint is crap compared to Audi/ VW and the car gives me the impression its just waiting for an opportunity to break and cost an absolute fortune to fix! Jeff is very very biased towards Audi and VW! Price for the repairs doing and knock the car price down. But IMO cheap metal is cheap metal and will rust through again after a good few years Quote
Guest Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Get a nice Audi but maybe with a real engine not one of those toy ones you can't beat a good v8 Quote
